Contains hyaluronic acid - a very viscous substance normally found in joint fluid but that is reduced in this condition. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Injection Medication which is put into the body via a syringe and a needle. Osteoarthritis Degenerative disorder of joints, most often from disease in the spine and in the weight bearing joints (knees and hips). Also known as degenerative joint disease, it can cause joint pain, loss of function, reduced joint motion, and deformity. Viscous Thick, coagulated; sticky or gummy. Joint Where the ends of two or more bones meet. Condition The term "condition" has a number of biomedical meanings including the following: 1.An unhealthy state, such as in "this is a progressive condition." 2.A state of fitness, such as "getting into condition." 3.Something that is essential to the occurrence of something else; essentially a "precondition." 4.As a verb: to cause a change in something so that a response that was previously associated with a certain stimulus becomes associated with another stimulus; to condition a person, as in behavioral conditioning. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Viscera The large internal organs. Viscous Thick, coagulated; sticky or gummy. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Vicodin Hydrocodone (chemical synonym: dihydrocodeinone; trade names: Vicodin, Anexsia, Dicodid, Hycodan, Hycomine, Lorcet, Lortab, Norco, Tussionex) is an opioid derived from either of the natural occuring opiates -- codeine or thebaine. Hydrocodone is an orally active analgesic and antitussive Schedule II narcotic which is marketed in multi-ingredient Schedule III products. The therapeutic dose of 5 mg to 10 mg is pharmacologically equivalent to 30 to 60 mg of oral codeine. Veneer Plastic or porcelain facing bonded directly to a tooth to improve its appearance. See laminate. Vertical dimension Arbitrary space between upper and lower jaws upon closure; may decrease over time due to wear, shifting or damage to the teeth. Valgus Lateral deviation of the segment of the limb distal to a joint (e.g. 'knock knee'). Varus Medial deviation of the segment of the limb distal to a joint (e.g. 'bow-legged'). Viscosupplementation Viadur Viadur (leuprolide acetate implant) is a unique once-yearly implant for the palliative treatment of advanced prostate cancer. Versant A test for the determination of HIV and hepatitis virus. Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) See Visual Evoked Response. Visual Evoked Response (VER) The VER is a test of the function of the visual pathways from the retina, along the optic nerve and optic tract to the early parts of the visual centers of the brain. Usually, EEG electrodes are placed on the head and the patient is required to view a flashing light and an alternating pattern (e.g., stripes or checks) on a TV. The VER is a diagnostic test for such things as Multiple Sclerosis, optic neuritis, optic neuropathies, cortical visual impairment and certain types of brain tumors. The pattern VER can also provide an objective estimate of a patient's visual acuity, even if the patient is nonverbal (e.g., too young, comatose or mentally impaired). Visual suppression This occurs when the brain ignores the visual image being transmitted from one eye. It is not voluntary. In the younger child it is associated with strabismus and amblyopia. An eye that is misaligned or is out of focus is likely to be suppressed by the child. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Viscosupplementation.
