Vein




Vein

A blood vessel that carries blood from the body back into the heart.

Blood
The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues.

Heart
The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system.

Varicose vein
An abnormally dilated vein.

VATER
A word made from the first letters of a group of birth defects. It is used when all of these birth defects affect the same child. The birth defects are: A constellation of vertebral defects, anal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula with oesophageal atresia, and renal and radial anomalies; associated with Fanconi's anaemia.

Vascular
Pertaining to blood vessels.

Vasodepressors
A medication that raises blood pressure.

Vasodilator
A medication that dilates or widens the opening in a blood vessel.

One of the two lower chambers of the heart.

Ventricular fibrillation
A condition in which the ventricles contract in rapid and unsynchronized rhythms and cannot pump blood into the body.

Ventricular tachycardia
A condition in which the ventricles cause a very fast heartbeat.

Vertigo
Dizziness.

Vestibular
Pertaining to or toward a vestibule. In dental anatomy, used to refer to the tooth surface directed toward the vestibule of the mouth.
