Vaginal birth
Vaginal birth The birth of a baby through the vaginal canal, as opposed to cesarean birth through a surgical incision in the abdomen. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Incision A cut made with a sharp instrument through the skin or other tissue. Abdomen The area between the chest and the hips. Contains the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen. Active ingredient(s): triple sulfa sulfabenzamide;sulfacetamide;sulfathiazole. Vagina The tube that forms the passage between the cervix/uterus and the vulva. It receives the penis during sexual intercourse and serves as the delivery passage for birth and for menstrual flow. Vaginal birth after cesarean The vaginal birth of a baby after a woman has already had a child by cesarean. While VBACs are increasingly considered a safe option, an estimated one percent of women attempting this will have a uterine rupture and require an emergency cesarean. Vaginal dryness Insufficient lubrication of the vagina, or its premature loss of lubrication, during the proceptive or acceptive phase of an erotosexual episode. Vaginal hysterectomy Procedure in which the uterus is removed through the vaginal opening. Vaginismus Recurrent premature contraction of the musculature of the vagina before or at the acceptive phase of an erotosexual episode, so that it is too tight and too dry to receive the penis. A hypophilic condition or syndrome variable in etiology, of premature contraction or spasm of the vaginal musculature in the course of sexuoerotic activity, preventing penile penetration or rendering it intolerably painful. Vaginitis Irritation, redness, or swelling of the vaginal tissues, usually resulting from a bacterial infection. Vaginoplasty In plastic surgery, the operative procedures for construction or reconstruction of a vagina, in cases of birth defect, of male-to-female transexualism, and of accidental or surgical trauma to the vagina. Vagistat-1 Vagistat-1 is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) approved in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): tioconazole. Volvulus A twisting of the stomach or large intestine. May be caused by the stomach being in the wrong position, a foreign substance, or abnormal joining of one part of the stomach or intestine to another. Volvulus can lead to blockage, perforation, peritonitis, and poor blood flow. Vomiting The release of stomach contents through the mouth. Vulva External, visible part of the female genital area. Vaccine A preparation, often of living weakened microorganisms, that is introduced into the body to produce immunity to a specific disease by causing the formation of antibodies. When a man has a vasectomy, it is the vas deferens that is severed. Vasectomy A surgical procedure in which a man's vas deferens is cut, preventing sperm from being ejaculated. While the procedure can sometimes be reversed, is generally considered a permanent form of birth control.
