Urine
UrineThe waste fluid secreted by the kidneys, transported by the ureters, stored in the bladder, and voided through the urethra. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Ureters Two tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Bladder A muscular triangular-shaped, hollow organ located in the pelvic cavity and supported by the pelvic floor muscles. The bladder stretches to store urine and contracts to release urine. Urethra A narrow tube that transports urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. In males, it also conducts sperm and semen to the outside. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Urinary bladder The organ that serves as a temporary storage place for urine. Also called the bladder. Urinary fistula An abnormally located opening of the urinary passageway, as when the two edges of a surgical repair fail to join along their full length. Urinary incontinence Loss of bladder control. Urine Testing Checking urine to see if it contains glucose (sugar) and ketones. Special strips of paper or tablets (called reagents) are put into a small amount of urine or urine plus water. Changes in the color of the strip show the amount of glucose or ketones in the urine. Urine testing is the only way to check for the presence of ketones, a sign of serious illness. However, urine testing is less desirable then blood testing for monitoring the level of glucose in the body. |See also: Blood glucose monitoring; reagents.
