Urethra
Urethra A narrow tube that transports urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. In males, it also conducts sperm and semen to the outside. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Urine The waste fluid secreted by the kidneys, transported by the ureters, stored in the bladder, and voided through the urethra. Bladder A muscular triangular-shaped, hollow organ located in the pelvic cavity and supported by the pelvic floor muscles. The bladder stretches to store urine and contracts to release urine. Sperm A sperm cell, or spermatozoon (pl. spermatozoa) (in Greek: sperm = semen and zoon = alive), is the haploid cell that is the male gamete. It is carried in fluid called semen, and is capable of fertilising an egg cell to form a zygote. A zygote can grow into a new organism, such as a human. Sperm cells contain half of the genetic information needed to create life. Generally, the sex of the offspring is determined by the sperm, through the chromosomal pair "XX" (for a female) or "XY" (for a male). Semen The fluid containing sperm (the male reproductive cells) that is expelled (ejaculated) through the end of the penis when the man reaches sexual climax (orgasm). SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Ureter A narrow tube that transfers urine from the kidney to the bladder. Ureters Two tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Urethral stricture Contraction or closure of the urethra, as when scar tissue contracts following urethral surgery. Urethralism The condition or activity of achieving sexuoerotic arousal through stimulation of the urinary urethra by means of insertions of rubber cathethers, rods, objects, fluids, ballbearings, and even long flexible cathether-like electrodes ("sparklers"). This activity may be part of a paraphilic rubber catheter fetish, a sadomasochistic repertory, sexuoerotic experimentation and variety, or activity the result of anatomic ignorance as urethral intercourse has been described wherein a case of infertility was due to the insertion of the husband's penis into the wifes urethra rather than the vagina. Urethritis Infection limited to the urethra. Urethroplasty Plastic surgery to construct an artificial urinary canal or urethra in a penis so as to correct a birth defect or an injury. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Uracil A nitrogenous base normally found in RNA but not DNA; uracil is capable of forming a base pair with adenine. Urine The waste fluid secreted by the kidneys, transported by the ureters, stored in the bladder, and voided through the urethra. Urethra Uterus The uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped organ located in a woman's lower abdomen, between the bladder and the rectum, that sheds its lining each month during menstruation and in which a fertilized egg (ovum) becomes implanted and the fetus develops. Uveitis The inflammation of structures of the inner eye, including the iris (the colored tissue that holds the lens of the eye) and the choroid plexus (a network of blood vessels around the eyeball). Uveitis occurs with some rheumatic diseases, including ankylosing spondylitis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Ulna Forearm bone on the side of the little finger. Ulnar Relating to the ulna. Ultrasound A diagnostic technique which uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the internal organs. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Urethra.
