Tolazamide
TolazamideA pill taken to lower the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Only some people with noninsulin-dependent diabetes take these pills. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Glucose The only simple carbohydrate that circulates in the bloodstream. Glucose is the primary fuel used by the brain. It can also be stored in the liver and muscles in a polymer form known as glycogen. Blood The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues. Diabetes A condition in which blood glucose is not well controlled. Type I diabetics make no insulin, whereas type 2 diabetics are characterized by the overproduction of insulin, but the inability of the target cells to respond to the insulin. Thiazolidinediones One of several different classes of pills that lower the level of glucose in the blood. Used in Type 2 diabetes. There are several thiazolidinedione pills available. This class of medications is also called "glitazones." Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) A hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, that controls the production and release of the thyroid hormones (T4 and T3). Measurement of the TSH level in the bloodstream is commonly done as a screening tool for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, and as an assessment of the adequacy of therapy in people who are taking thyroid hormone pills as therapy. Typically, high values of TSH are associated with hypothyroidism, and absence of TSH is associated with hyperthyroidism. Transcutaneous Electronic Nerve Stimulation (TENS) A treatment for painful neuropathy. TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDER / TM Sometimes called "TMJ disease" or TM dysfunction, this is a painful condition of the jaw joint which can cause a variety of symptoms such as headaches, facial pain, tenderness or ringing in the ears, clicking or popping of the jaw, or pain when opening and closing the mouth. These problems are referred to as TM disorders. The causes of TM are not well understood and there are varying opinions on how to most effectively diagnose and treat these conditions. The causes of TM disorder may include trauma, arthritis and stress, or a combination thereof. Oral habits such as clenching or bruxing the teeth especially at night when a patient is asleep can slowly cause the muscles to fatigue and spasm without the awareness of the patient. Treatment is usually done in a step-by-step plan, as only minor corrective treatment may be necessary. If pain persists some patients may need more advanced treatment such as medication, psychological intervention, physical therapy or splint therapy. In some severe cases surgery may be needed to correct the joint. Terminal Condition An irreversible, incurable, and untreatable condition from which there can be no recovery, and death is likely to occur soon.
