Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)A hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, that controls the production and release of the thyroid hormones (T4 and T3). Measurement of the TSH level in the bloodstream is commonly done as a screening tool for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, and as an assessment of the adequacy of therapy in people who are taking thyroid hormone pills as therapy. Typically, high values of TSH are associated with hypothyroidism, and absence of TSH is associated with hyperthyroidism. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Hormone A chemical substance formed in the body that is carried in the bloodstream to affect another part of the body; an example is thyroid hormone, produced by the thyroid gland in the neck, which affects growth, temperature regulation, metabolic rate, and other body functions. Anterior The front, as opposed to the posterior. The anterior surface of the heart is toward the breast bone (the sternum). Pituitary The gland from which a number of hormones are released into the bloodstream. These hormones include growth hormone, ACTH, B-lipocortin (the precursor to B-endorphorin), FSH, LH, and TSH. Gland An organ that releases a chemical. Endocrine glands are ductless and secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. Exocrine glands secrete externally, either through a tube or duct. Thyroid The gland in the throat that synthesizes thyroid hormones that affect metabolism. Hormones Biological compounds that communicate information at a distance. Hormones require specific receptors to begin their biological action and use second messengers to initiate the cellular process that uses that information. Screening Testing for disease in people without symptoms. Hypothyroidism Deficiency of thyroid hormone; the opposite of hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland is in the throat, near the larynx or Adam's apple. Hyperthyroidism Overproduction of thyroid hormone. It instructs the pituitary to release TSH. Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) The hormone released from the pituitary that causes the thyroid gland to produce T4 hormone. TSH uses the second messenger cyclic AMP to initiate the synthesis of T4. TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDER / TM Sometimes called "TMJ disease" or TM dysfunction, this is a painful condition of the jaw joint which can cause a variety of symptoms such as headaches, facial pain, tenderness or ringing in the ears, clicking or popping of the jaw, or pain when opening and closing the mouth. These problems are referred to as TM disorders. The causes of TM are not well understood and there are varying opinions on how to most effectively diagnose and treat these conditions. The causes of TM disorder may include trauma, arthritis and stress, or a combination thereof. Oral habits such as clenching or bruxing the teeth especially at night when a patient is asleep can slowly cause the muscles to fatigue and spasm without the awareness of the patient. Treatment is usually done in a step-by-step plan, as only minor corrective treatment may be necessary. If pain persists some patients may need more advanced treatment such as medication, psychological intervention, physical therapy or splint therapy. In some severe cases surgery may be needed to correct the joint. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH).
