Telangiectasia
TelangiectasiaTelangiectasia are dilated superficial blood vessels. This appearance may occur in rosacea, in certain systemic diseases like ataxia-telangiectasia, scleroderma or in some long-term therapy with topical fluorinated corticosteroids. Telangiectasia may also occur as a component of inherited disorders, including hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Telangiectasia Telangiectasia are dilated superficial blood vessels. Telangiectasia may also occur as a component of inherited disorders, including hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. Blood The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues. Rosacea An acneiform eruption occurring mostly in middle-aged adults and appearing generally on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Three types are recognized: granulomatous, glandular hyperplastic with rhinophyma, and ocular. Systemic Disease or symptoms that affect many different parts of the body. Ataxia-telangiectasia "A progressive neurodegenerative genetic disease characterized by cerebellar ataxia (incoordination and lack of balance), ocular telangiectasia (""red eyes"" due to widening of small blood vessels in the conjunctiva), immune defects, and a predisposition to malignancy. Chromosomal breakage is a feature. Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) cells are abnormally sensitive to killing by ionizing radiation." Scleroderma A relatively rare form of arthritis in which the body produces too much collagen. Excess collagen may be deposited in the skin, joints, and other body organs. Scleroderma is a chronic disorder marked by hardening and thickening of the skin. Corticosteroids Sometimes referred to just as 'steroids'. Hormones (which occur naturally) which have a variety of actions when given therapeutically. Usually administered for their anti-inflammatory effect. Their use is limited by unwanted side-effects which may sometimes be serious. Hereditary Transmitted from parent to offspring; derived from ancestry. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- T-independent antigen An immunogen which induces antibody synthesis in the absence of lymphokines released by T cells; the antibodies are generally only of the IgM isotype. Titre The reciprocal of the last dilution of a titration giving a measurable effect; e.g. if the last dilution giving significant agglutination is 1:128, the titre is 128. Tolerance Diminished or absent capacity to make a specific response to an antigen, usually produced as a result of contact with that antigen under nonimmunizing conditions. Toxoid A nontoxic derivative of a toxin used as an immunogen for the induction of antibodies capable of cross-reacting with the toxin. Tenuate Tenuate is the brand name for diethylpropion. Diethylpropion is a sympathomimetic amine similar to an amphetamine, also known as an "anorectic" or an "anorexigenic" medication. Tenuate stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain)increasing the heart rate and blood pressure and decreasing the appetite. This drug is used as a short-term supplement to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity and should only be taken with a medical prescription. Outside US it may be found under the name of Neobes. Telangiectasia Tachycardia Rapid heart beat. Tachypnea Rapid breathing. Telemetry unit A small transmitter with wires that attach ECG patches to the chest that is used to send information about the heart via radio transmission to healthcare professionals for evaluation. Temporal arteries Vessels located over the temples on each side of the head, that supply blood to part of the head. Tendinitis An inflammation in a tendon or the tendon covering.
