Syndesmophyte
Syndesmophyte Fine bony projection (usually vertically orientated, unlike osteophytes) from the margin of a vertebra. Characteristic of spondylarthropathy such as ankylosing spondylitis. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Projection A defense mechanism, operating unconsciously, in which what is emotionally unacceptable in the self is unconsciously rejected and attributed (projected) to others. Margin Interface between a restoration and tooth structure. Ankylosing Undergoing ankylosis (stiffening or fusion of a joint). Spondylitis Inflammation of the vertebrae. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Syndrome A grouping of signs and symptoms, based on their frequent co-occurrence, that may suggest a common underlying pathogenesis, course, familial pattern, or treatment selection. Syndrome X A combination of health conditions that place a person at high risk for heart disease. These conditions are type 2 diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperlipidemia (high levels of fat in the blood), and obesity. According to theory, all of these conditions are associated with high blood insulin levels, and it is claimed that the underlying problem in patients with Syndrome X is faulty insulin release from the beta cells of the pancreas. Also called Metabolic Syndrome (MS). PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Spondylarthritis Defect in pars interarticularis of vertebra. Spondylolisthesis Malalignment of vertebrae due to spondylolysis or degenerative change which allows one vertebra to slip forward on top of another. Still's Disease A form of Juvenile Chronic Arthritis. Sudeck's Atrophy See 'Algodystrophy'. Sweet's syndrome Acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis. A red tender rash with leucocytosis and fever. Syndesmophyte Synovectomy Procedure to remove or obliterate synovium as a means of reducing or eliminating joint inflammation. May be surgical or medical (see also 'Yttrium'). Synovial fluid Joint fluid. Synovium Thin membrane (normally one cell thick) which is found within the joint capsule. Produces synovial fluid which lubricates and nourishes the joint cartilage. Becomes inflamed and thickened in inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid disease. Synovitis Inflammation of the synovium Systemic lupus erythematosus The commonest connective tissue disorder in which the commonest clinical features are dermatological (often with photosensitivity) and rheumatological.
