Swedish massage

Swedish massageThe most common form of bodywork in Western countries. Its originator, Peter Hendrik (Per Henrick) Ling (1776-1839), of Sweden, was a fencing master, physiologist, and poet. His method was called the "Ling system" or the "Swedish movement treatment." Dr. S.W. Mitchell introduced Swedish massage in the United States. It is based on scientific anatomy and often vigorous. The purported aim of Swedish massage is to improve circulation of blood and lymph.

Bodywork
Any of a number of therapeutic or simply relaxing practices that involve the manipulation, massage, or regimented movement of body parts. Examples include massage, craniosacral therapy, and Pilates. Bodywork may be used as an adjunct to medical treatment, or it may be prescribed as a form of physical therapy for certain conditions.
Master
Sadomasochistic vernacular term for the sadistic partner whose role is one of total domination and disciplinarian.
Anatomy

Stroke (apoplexy, cerebral accident, cerebrovascular accident, CVA, cerebral apoplexy)
A neural deficit that results from an undersupply of oxygen to the brain (e.g., due to thrombosis or a cerebral aneurysm, embolism, or hemorrhage), develops within minutes or hours, and persists for more than 24 hours.
Strong holism
An aspect of supernaturalistic pantheism, or Spinozism, which holds that nature is divine. According to strong holism, the universe is uninterrupted in substance--an unbroken whole--and all things have instantaneous interconnections.

Swedish massage
Synchronicity (synchronistic principle)
"Acausal connecting principle," the supposed equivalent of a cause. Carl Jung (see "Jungian psychology") posited synchronicity--which he equated with the Tao--to describe meaningful but apparently accidental concurrences or sequences of events.
Saccharin
A man-made sweetener that people use in place of sugar because it has no calories.
Saturated Fat
A type of fat that comes from animals.
Second Phase Insulin Release
Delayed release of insulin into the bloodstream from the beta cell after the blood glucose level rises. It is thought that this delayed release is due to release of insulin that is manufactured in the beta cell after the blood sugar starts to rise.
Secondary Diabetes
When a person gets diabetes because of another disease or because of taking certain drugs or chemicals.
