Sociopath (APD)Sociopath also known as Antisocial personality disorder (APD) involves a history of chronic antisocial behavior that begins before the age of 15 and continues into adulthood. The disorder is manifested by a pattern of irresponsible and antisocial behavior as indicated by academic failure, poor job performance, illegal activities, recklessness, and impulsive behavior. Symptoms may include dysphoria, an inability to tolerate boredom, feeling victimized, and a diminished capacity for intimacy. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Personality The uniqueness that characterizes an individual as a person as compared with, and in response to others, with respect to consistency or inconsistency of behavior and life-style. Chronic Ongoing or recurring. Chronic medical conditions include diabetes, epilepsy, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Dysphoria Dysphoria is the lack of ability to feel enjoyment at any activity, an emotional state characterized by malaise, anxiety, depression or unease. The opposite of dysphoria would be euphoria. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Social worker An individual, usually with a university degree in social work, who provides counsel and aid to individuals with emotional and family problems. Social adaptation The ability to live and express oneself according to society's restrictions and cultural demands. Social alienation The state of estrangement individuals feel in cultural settings that they view as foreign, unpredictable, or unacceptable. Social distancing Absence of sociable approach or response to other people that is phobic rather than depressive, catatonic, or autistic aloneness. Social phobia A type of anxiety disorder that causes significant anxiety and discomfort related to a fear of being embarrassed, judged, humiliated or scorned by others in social or performance situations. Social workers Persons performing organized work intended to advance the social conditions of a community, and especially of the disadvantaged, by providing psychological counseling, guidance, and assistance, especially in the form of social services.
