Sinus node




Sinus node

The cells that produce the electrical impulses that cause the heart to contract.

Heart
The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system.

Contract
A written, dated, and signed agreement between two or more involved parties that sets out any arrangements on delegation and distribution of tasks and obligations and, if appropriate, on financial matters. The protocol may serve as the basis of a contract.

Sinus
Paranasal sinuses. Air cavities within the facial bones, lined by mucous membranes similar to those in other parts of the airways.

Sinus rythm
A normal heart rythm being generated by the SA node.

Sinus tachycardia
A normal, but fast rythm being generated by the SA node. This is very different than the term Ventricular Tachycardia.

Sinusitis
Inflammation of the sinuse (hollow spaces in the bone of the cheeks and forehead), due to an infection or an allergic reaction. Probably the most common cause of pain in and around the eye. Symptoms include head pain (headache, pain around the eyes, toothache, jaw pain), nasal discharge, postnasal drip, coughing, eyelid swelling, swelling around the eyes, a stuffy nose, fatigue, bad breath and a sore throat.

Silent ischemia
Ischemia not accompanied by chest pain.

Sigmoid colon
The lower part of the colon that empties into the rectum.

Sigmoidoscopy
Looking into the sigmoid colon and rectum with a flexible or rigid tube, called a sigmoidoscope.

Squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL)
Like CIN, SIL is a term used to classify the degree of precancerous change in cells of the cervix in a condition called cervical dysplasia.

Sinus
Paranasal sinuses. Air cavities within the facial bones, lined by mucous membranes similar to those in other parts of the airways.

Sitz bath
A special plastic tub. A person sits in a few inches of warm water to help relieve discomfort of hemorrhoids or anal fissures.

Small bowel enema
X-rays of the small intestine taken as barium liquid passes through the organ. Also called small bowel follow-through. See also lower GI series.

Small intestine
Organ where most digestion occurs. It measures about 20 feet and includes the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.

Soft-tissue
Generally, the ligaments, tendons, and muscles in the musculoskeletal system.

Social workers
Persons performing organized work intended to advance the social conditions of a community, and especially of the disadvantaged, by providing psychological counseling, guidance, and assistance, especially in the form of social services.
