Shaken Baby Syndrome




Shaken Baby Syndrome

A severe form of head injury that occurs when an infant or small child is shaken forcibly enough to cause the brain to bounce against the skull; the degree of brain damage depends on the extent and duration of the shaking. Minor symptoms include irritability, lethargy, tremors, or vomiting; major symptoms include seizures, coma, stupor, or death.

A sleep-like state; not conscious. May be due to a high or low level of glucose (sugar) in the blood.

Stupor
A state of unresponsiveness with immobility and mutism.

Death
1. The end of life. The cessation of life. (These common definitions of death ultimately depend upon the definition of life, upon which there is no consensus.) 2. The permanent cessation of all vital bodily functions. (This definition depends upon the definition of "vital bodily functions.") See: Vital bodily functions. 3. The common law standard for determining death is the cessation of all vital functions, traditionally demonstrated by "an absence of spontaneous respiratory and cardiac functions." 4. The uniform determination of death.

Syndrome X
A combination of health conditions that place a person at high risk for heart disease. These conditions are type 2 diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperlipidemia (high levels of fat in the blood), and obesity. According to theory, all of these conditions are associated with high blood insulin levels, and it is claimed that the underlying problem in patients with Syndrome X is faulty insulin release from the beta cells of the pancreas. Also called Metabolic Syndrome (MS).

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS)
Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a severe and potentially life-threatening (15% of cases) disease, it is a hypersensitivity complex affecting the skin and the mucous membranes, a severe expression of erythema multiforme (EM) (and so SJS is also called erythema multiforme major).

Sjogrens Syndrome
Chronic inflammatory disease, or syndrome accompanying other diseases, and characterized by dryness of the mouth and eyes.

Stockholm Syndrome
The Stockholm syndrome is a psychological state in which the victims of a kidnapping, or persons detained against their free will – prisoners – develop a relationship with their captor(s). This solidarity can sometimes become a real complicity, with prisoners actually helping the captors to achieve their goals or to escape police.

Serotonin Syndrome
Serotonin syndrome is a condition caused by an excess of serotonin in the brain. The effects of serotonin syndrome may progress from headaches, dizziness and vomiting, to coma and death.

Shaken Baby Syndrome

Sports Medicine
A branch of medicine that specializes in the prevention and treatment of injuries resulting from training for and participation in athletic events. Among the most common sports injuries are shin splints, runner’s knee, pulled hamstring muscles, Achilles tendonitis, and ankle sprain.

Sebum
The oily substance produced by sebaceous glands.

Steroid acne
Acne that develops from long-term use of corticosteroid medications. Since this condition can develop, corticosteroid medications are prescribed for a limited time.

Systemic therapy
Treatment that consists of taking medication internally, such as in pill form or by injection or infusion.

Serenity
Commercial name for a lithium pill used to treat bipolar disorder and other conditions.
