Seronegative




Seronegative

Refers to arthritis and means that the patient does not have rheumatoid factor in the blood. A proportion of patients with rheumatoid arthritis are 'seronegative'.

Arthritis
Inflammation of a joint, usually accompanied by pain, swelling, and stiffness, and resulting from infection, trauma, degenerative changes, metabolic disturbances, or other causes. Arthritis occurs in various forms, such as the arthritis associated with infections, osteoarthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis. Many forms of vasculitis can also be associated with arthritis.

Blood
The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues.

Serous membrane
A thin membrane lining the closed cavities of the body; has two layers with a space between that is filled with serous fluid

Scheuermann's disease
A condition that occurs in adolescence. It affects the thoracic spine and may give rise to pain and a kyphosis ('hump') although more often it is painless.

Schirmer test
To detect dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Sterile porous paper strips are hooked over the lower eyelid and tear production can be assessed.

Scoliosis
Lateral curvature (actually, rotational deformity) of the spine.

Septic arthritis
Bacterial infection of a joint or joints. Many organisms may do this but is usually very serious and may be life-threatening and must be diagnosed and treated urgently.

SERM
Selective (O)estrogen Receptor Modulators. A class of drug that mimics the effect of oestrogen but in a tissue-selective manner. Used in the treatment of osteoporosis. See link to New Medical Therapies site article.

Pain along the tibia - associated with running.

Shoulder-hand syndrome
A form of algodystrophy. The hand is affected in conjunction with capsulitis of the shoulder.
