Selective mutism Selective mutism is a condition in which what is often anxiety or excessive shyness causes a person to refuse to speak in certain situations, even though having the capability to. Anxiety A psychological and/or biological response to stress. Feelings of anxiety involve discomforting apprehension or concern, which may include symptoms such as cognitive difficulties, hypersensitivity, dizziness, muscular weakness, breathing difficulties, irregular heart beat, sweating, and sensations of fear. Typically, anxiety is a natural and healthy response to life experiences. However, exaggerated or chronic anxiety often indicates an anxiety disorder. Anxiety can be produced by external stress (exogenous anxiety) or internal stress (endogenous anxiety). Selective mutism Steroid One of a group of naturally occurring or synthetic hormones which are complex lipids based on the cholesterol molecule, and which affect chemical processes in the body, growth, and sexual and other physiological functions. They include adrenal cortical, testicular, and ovarian hormones and their derivatives. Sarcoidosis A chronic, systemic, granulomatous disease of unknown origin which may involve almost any body organ or tissue and is characterized by the presence of noncaseating nodules in the covering of the internal/external surfaces of the body. Scleroderma A relatively rare form of arthritis in which the body produces too much collagen. Excess collagen may be deposited in the skin, joints, and other body organs. Scleroderma is a chronic disorder marked by hardening and thickening of the skin. Sertraline hydrochloride Sertraline hydrochloride is an antidepressant for oral administration. It is chemically unrelated to tricyclic, tetracyclic, or other available antidepressant agents. Serlift A commercial name for sertraline hydrochloride, an orally administered antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) type.
