Reflux




Reflux

A condition that occurs when gastric juices or small amounts of food from the stomach flow back into the esophagus and mouth. Also called regurgitation.

Condition
The term "condition" has a number of biomedical meanings including the following: 1.An unhealthy state, such as in "this is a progressive condition." 2.A state of fitness, such as "getting into condition." 3.Something that is essential to the occurrence of something else; essentially a "precondition." 4.As a verb: to cause a change in something so that a response that was previously associated with a certain stimulus becomes associated with another stimulus; to condition a person, as in behavioral conditioning.

Rapid gastric emptying
A condition that occurs when food moves too fast from the stomach into the small intestine. Symptoms are nausea, pain, weakness, and sweating. This syndrome most often affects people who have had stomach operations. Also called dumping syndrome.

Reconstructive surgery
Serving to rebuild, restore, or correct the appearance and function of defective, damaged, or misshaped body structures or parts.

Rectal manometry
A test that uses a thin tube and balloon to measure pressure and movements of the rectal and anal sphincter muscles. Usually used to diagnose chronic constipation and fecal incontinence.

Rectal prolapse
A condition in which the rectum slips so that it protrudes from the anus.

Rectocele
Condition in which weakening of the lower vaginal wall causes the rectum to bulge into the vagina.
