Reflectance

Reflectance

The fraction of incident light that is reflected toward the eye by an object.

SIMILAR TERMS
--------------------------------------

Reflection densitometry
Technique applied to the living eye to study photopigments. Measures the light reflected from the fundus (i.e. not absorbed by any pigments).

Reflex
An automatic, involuntary movement.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy
See 'algodystrophy'.

Refludan
Refludan is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) approved in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): lepirudin recombinant.

Reflux
A condition that occurs when gastric juices or small amounts of food from the stomach flow back into the esophagus and mouth. Also called regurgitation.

Reflux esophagitis
Irritation of the esophagus because stomach contents flow back into the esophagus.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS
--------------------------------------

Rooting reflex
One of the reflexes present at birth; infants will automatically turn their heads and start sucking when their cheeks are stroked.

Roseola infantum
A common viral illness in children under 2, roseola infantum begins with a high fever, runny nose, and swollen glands, usually followed by a rash on the torso, arms, or legs. While the infection is common, serious complications from roseola infantum are rare.

RU-486
An abortion-inducing pill, RU-486 works by blocking the action of progesterone, which is vital for maintaining a pregnancy. Effective only during the first seven weeks of pregnancy or up to five weeks after a missed period.

Rubella
A mild, highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious birth defects if a pregnant woman is afflicted. Women who haven't had it should make sure they're immunized before conception.

Receptive field
Area of the retina and visual space that when stimulated produces a change in the response rate of a neuron.

Reflectance

Reflection densitometry
Technique applied to the living eye to study photopigments. Measures the light reflected from the fundus (i.e. not absorbed by any pigments).

Retinal
Light-absorbing portion of rhodopsin. The absorption of light causes retinal to change from 11-cis to 11-trans configuration

Retinal layers
Retinal layers are: Outer nuclear layer - Contains photoreceptors; Inner nuclear layer - Contains bipolar, horizontal and amacrine cells; Ganglion cell layer - Contains ganglion cells; Outer plexiform layer - Contains processes of receptor, bipolar and horizontal cells; Inner plexiform layer - Contains processes of bipolar, amacrine and ganglion cells.

Retinex Theory
Theory of lightness and color perception. Argues that the color of an object is not determined by the composition of the light coming from the object. The color of a unit area is determined by a trio of numbers each computed on a single waveband to give the relationship for the waveband between the unit area and the rest of the unit areas in a visual scene.

Retinotectal pathway
Pathway from the retina to superior colliculi.
