Preimplantation screening

Preimplantation screening

Or preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) - Before an in vitro-fertilized embryo is implanted in a woman's uterus, it can be screened for specific genetic mutations that are known to cause particular genetic diseases or for chromosomal abnormalities. One or more cells are removed from the preimplantation embryo for testing.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Genetic
Hereditary. Having to do with the genes.

Diagnosis
The determination of the presence of a specific disease or infection, usually accomplished by evaluating clinical symptoms and laboratory tests.

Embryo
The early stages of development before an organism becomes self supporting.

Uterus
The uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped organ located in a woman's lower abdomen, between the bladder and the rectum, that sheds its lining each month during menstruation and in which a fertilized egg (ovum) becomes implanted and the fetus develops.

SIMILAR TERMS
--------------------------------------

Preimplantation embryo
The very early, free-floating embryo, from the time the egg is fertilized (zygote) until the beginning of implantation (in humans, a period of about 6 days). Also includes embryos resulting from nuclear transfer, in all the developmental stages through the blastocyst stage.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)
Or preimplantation screening. Before an in vitro-fertilized embryo is implanted in a woman's uterus, it can be screened for specific genetic mutations that are known to cause particular genetic diseases or for chromosomal abnormalities. One or more cells are removed from the preimplantation embryo for testing.

Preiser's disease
Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the scaphoid bone in the wrist.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS
--------------------------------------

Provocation test
Also called a challenge test. A test performed on eyes, nose or lungs and used to diagnose an allergy or monitor the effect of e.g. specific allergy vaccination. The allergen is introduced in increasing doses to the organ to see if the person reacts and, if so, at what level of exposure.

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs)
Stem cells that include in their progeny all cell types that can be found in a postimplantation embryo, fetus, or developed organism.

Precursor cells
Or progenitor cells - In fetal or adult tissues, these are partially differentiated cells that divide and give rise to differentiated cells.

Progenitor cells
Or precursor cells. In fetal or adult tissues, these are partially differentiated cells that divide and give rise to differentiated cells.

Preimplantation embryo
The very early, free-floating embryo, from the time the egg is fertilized (zygote) until the beginning of implantation (in humans, a period of about 6 days). Also includes embryos resulting from nuclear transfer, in all the developmental stages through the blastocyst stage.

Preimplantation screening

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)
Or preimplantation screening. Before an in vitro-fertilized embryo is implanted in a woman's uterus, it can be screened for specific genetic mutations that are known to cause particular genetic diseases or for chromosomal abnormalities. One or more cells are removed from the preimplantation embryo for testing.

Prenatal diagnosis
Detection of abnormalities and disease conditions while a fetus is developing in the uterus. Many techniques for prenatal diagnosis, such as chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis, require sampling placental tissue or fetal cells found in the amniotic fluid or fetomaternal circulation. Others, such as ultrasonography, can be performed without cell or tissue samples.

Pronuclei
See Pronucleus.

Pronucleus
Plural: pronuclei. Refers to the haploid nucleus of egg or sperm prior to fertilization, and immediately after fertilization, before the sperm and egg nuclei have fused into a single diploid nucleus.

Peak day
The last day your cervical mucus has the consistency of egg white; usually coincides with the beginning of a temperature spike.
