Postprandial

|
PostprandialOccurring after a meal. Example: Blood taken 1-2 hours after eating to see the amount of glucose in the blood would be called a postprandial blood glucose test.

Blood
The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues.
Glucose
The only simple carbohydrate that circulates in the bloodstream. Glucose is the primary fuel used by the brain. It can also be stored in the liver and muscles in a polymer form known as glycogen.
Postprandial

Single structure that combines post-core and crown.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
A syndrome caused by re-experiencing traumatic events while being unaware of or unresponsive to current events or, in other words, a "flashback." A child may experience sleeping problems, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, have difficulty concentrating, self-destructive behavior, hyperactivity or anxiety/panic disorder. Therapy is crucial in managing PTSD.
Postcholecystectomy syndrome
A condition that occurs after gallbladder removal. The muscle between the gallbladder and the small intestine does not work properly, causing pain, nausea, and indigestion. Also called biliary dyskinesia.

At or toward the back.
Posterior parietal cortex
Concerned with the perception of the spatial relations among objects.
Postgastrectomy syndrome
A condition that occurs after an operation to remove the stomach (gastrectomy). See also dumping syndrome.
Postmarketing surveillance
ongoing safety monitoring of marketed drugs. See Phase 4 studies, Phase 5 studies.
Postmature
An infant born at 42 weeks or more is considered postmature. As withprematurity, being postmature can lead to complications; the baby may belarger and less able to pass through the birth canal or the placenta may nolonger be able to provide adequate oxygen or nutrition.
Postnatal care
Medical care for both newborn and mother during the first 6 weeks after birth.
Postnatal Depression
Depression in women occurring usually within four weeks after the delivery of a child. The degree of depression ranges from mild transient depression to neurotic or psychotic depressive disorders.
Postoperative
After surgery.
Postpartum
After childbirth.
Postpartum depression
More severe than the more common and milder baby blues, postpartumdepression is characterized by sadness, impatience, restlessness, and inability to care for the baby.
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) (Neurocardiogenic Syncope, Dysautonomia)
Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous syndrome. Causes symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, increased heart rate, and other symptoms. See syncope.
Postural tremor
A tremor of a limb that increases when the limb is stretched.
Posturography
A force platform that evaluates somatosensory and visual influences on posture and equilibrium.
Postvagotomy stasis
Delayed stomach emptying; occurs after surgery on the vagus nerve.

Pituitary Gland
An endocrine gland in the small, bony cavity at the base of the brain. Often called "the master gland," the pituitary serves the body in many ways-in growth, in food use, and in reproduction.
Point System
A rarely-used system of meal planning for diabetes in which foods are rated based upon calorie content, regardless of blood glucose effect or nutritional content. One "calorie point" equals 75 calories. The system may have a role to help with weight loss, but is not typically presently recommended for type 1 diabetes. |Compare to carbohydrate counting and Exchange Lists.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
A syndrome associated with bilateral polycystic ovaries and insulin resistance. Symptoms frequently include decreased menstrual flow, irregular menses, anovulation, and infertility.
Polyphagia
Excessive hunger; may be a symptom of uncontrolled diabetes.
Polyunsaturated Fats
A type of fat that comes from vegetables.

Traditional definition:|The stage before the development of diabetes, with normal glucose tolerance but with an increased risk of developing diabetes at some future time. Examples of increased risk might include family history of diabetes, prior diagnosis of gestational diabetes, presence of a positive antibody test for diabetes, or insulin resistance.
Preprandial

Previous Abnormality of Glucose Tolerance (PrevAGT)
A term for people who have had above-normal levels of blood glucose (sugar) when tested for diabetes in the past but who show as normal on a current test. PrevAGT used to be called either "latent diabetes" or "prediabetes."
Proinsulin
The initial protein made by the beta cells of the pancreas that later is broken into several pieces. Proinsulin consists of three parts: C-Peptide and two long strands of amino acids (called the alpha and beta chains) that later become linked together to form the insulin molecule. |From every molecule of proinsulin, one molecule of insulin plus one molecule of C-Peptide are produced.
Proliferative Retinopathy
A disease of the small blood vessels of the retina of the eye. |See also: Diabetic retinopathy.
