Portal hypertension
Portal hypertension High blood pressure in the portal vein. This vein carries blood into the liver. Portal hypertension is caused by a blood clot. This is a common complication of cirrhosis. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Blood The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues. Vein A blood vessel that carries blood from the body back into the heart. Liver The largest organ in the body. The liver carries out many important functions, such as making bile, changing food into energy, and cleaning alcohol and poisons from the blood. Hypertension Higher blood pressure than normal. Diastolic blood pressure from 90 to 99 mm HG is considered mild hypertension; 100–109, moderate hypertension; and 110 or greater, severe hypertension. Systolic blood pressure from 140 to 159 mm HG is considered mild hypertension; 160–179, moderate hypertension; and 180 or greater, severe hypertension. Clot A jelly-like mass of blood. Complication In medicine, an additional problem that arises following a procedure, treatment or illness and is secondary to it. A complication complicates the situation. Cirrhosis A chronic liver condition caused by scar tissue and cell damage. Cirrhosis makes it hard for the liver to remove poisons (toxins) like alcohol and drugs from the blood. These toxins build up in the blood and may affect brain function. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) Range of physical and emotional symptoms that some women experience prior to their monthly periods. Polyposis The presence of many polyps. Polyunsaturated fat A type of fat found in vegetable oils and margarines that doesn't appear to raise blood cholesterol levels. Porphyria A group of rare, inherited blood disorders. When a person has porphyria, cells fail to change chemicals (porphyrins) to the substance (heme) that gives blood its color. Porphyrins then build up in the body. They show up in large amounts in stool and urine, causing the urine to be colored blue. They cause a number of problems, including strange behavior. Portal hypertension Portal vein The large vein that carries blood from the intestines and spleen to the liver. Portosystemic shunt An operation to create an opening between the portal vein and other veins around the liver. Can also be accessed via the jugular vein in angiography. Known as T.I.P.S. Postcholecystectomy syndrome A condition that occurs after gallbladder removal. The muscle between the gallbladder and the small intestine does not work properly, causing pain, nausea, and indigestion. Also called biliary dyskinesia. Postgastrectomy syndrome A condition that occurs after an operation to remove the stomach (gastrectomy). See also dumping syndrome.
