Placenta
Placenta Organ that grows in the uterus during pregnancy and connects the blood supplies of the mother and baby. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Organ A structural unit of an animal or plant that serves a specific function. Uterus The uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped organ located in a woman's lower abdomen, between the bladder and the rectum, that sheds its lining each month during menstruation and in which a fertilized egg (ovum) becomes implanted and the fetus develops. Blood The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Placebo A placebo is an inactive pill, liquid, or powder that has no treatment value. In clinical trials, experimental treatments are often compared with placebos to assess the treatment's effectiveness. In some studies, the participants in the control group will receive a placebo instead of an active drug or treatment. No sick participant receives a placebo if there is a known beneficial treatment. Placenta previa Abnormal location of the placenta in the lower part of the uterus, near or over the cervix. Placental abruption Premature detachment of the placenta from the wall of the uterus causing severe bleeding that is life threatening to both a pregnant woman and fetus. Placidyl Placidyl is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) approved in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): ethchlorvynol. In primates such as humans and monkeys, the thumb and big toe have two phalanges, while the other fingers and toes consist of three. Peptide Two or more amino acids linked together. Prophase The early stage of nuclear division during which chromosomes condense and become visible. The initial stage of mitosis or meiosis in which chromosomes become visible and the spindle apparatus forms. Parathyroid glands Located in front of the neck, below the larynx (voice box). The parathyroid glands play a role in the regulation of the body's calcium balance. Placenta Polyp A growth that projects from the lining of mucous membrane, such as the intestine. Prolactin A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland which affects growth of the mammary (related to the breasts) glands. Pneumococcus genera Streptococcus pneumoniae is a species of Streptococcus that is a major human pathogen. Prednisone A steroid drug related chemically and therapeutically to the steroid hormones normally made in the adrenal glands. Prednisone and other steroid medications carry significant risks. Panic button A button to push in order to summon help in case of an emergency. This device triggers an alarm when activated by its user.
