Phototherapy

Phototherapy The use of ultraviolet light to treat newborns with jaundice.

Jaundice
A condition in which the skin and the whites of the eyes become yellow, urine darkens, and the color of stool becomes lighter than normal. Jaundice occurs when the liver is not working properly or when a bile duct is blocked.

Using a special strong beam of light (laser) to seal off bleeding blood vessels such as in the eye. The laser can also burn away blood vessels that should not have grown in the eye. This is the main treatment for diabetic retinopathy.

A light sensitive drug is given through a vein and concentrates in the tumor. Then, during a surgical procedure, a special light activates the drug. The activated drug kills tumor cells.
Photofrin
Photofrin is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) approved in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): porfimer sodium.
Photophobia
Severe discomfort to bright lights. Usually a symptom of eye disease, such as glaucoma, in an infant or retinal disease in a child or adult. Sometimes treated with dark sunglasses.
Photopic
Bright light conditions where only the cones are functional.
Photoreceptor
A light sensitive neuron. Photoreceptors interact with light which produces changes in their electrical properties which are communicated to other neurons. They constitute the first stage in the physiological process which underlies vision. The human retina, like the retina of most vertebrates, contains two broad classes of photo-receptors, rods and cones.

The brand name of a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin. The drug is used to induce labor.
Plantar reflex
A normal reflex curling of the toes, especially in children over one year of age, resulting from stroking the sole of the foot. Newborns will flex the big toe and spread the other toes.
Play group
A group of babies or toddlers that parents gather together to developsocial skills and reduce stranger and separation anxieties. Activities may bestructured or open.
Polio vaccine
Routinely given to all babies in the United States in four doses at 2, 4, 12, and 18 months, the polio vaccine prevents polio, which can, in severe cases, lead to crippling, paralysis, and death. There are two types of polio vaccines: the IPV, which stands for inactivated polio vaccine, given as an injection, and the more common OPV, which stands for oral polio vaccine, given in drops in a child's mouth.
Polyps
An abnormal growth of a mucous membrane, often in the nasal passages, bladder, rectum, or uterus. Polyps, though often benign, have been associated with cancers and can be surgically removed.
