Parkinsonian gait is the distinctive unsteady walk associated with Parkinson’s disease translated into a tendency to lean unnaturally backward or forward, and to develop a stooped, head-down, shoulders-drooped stance. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Disease Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus. Chronic Ongoing or recurring. Chronic medical conditions include diabetes, epilepsy, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Rigidity Rigidity is an increased resistance to the passive movement of a limb. Balance A biological system that enables us to know where our bodies are in the environment and to maintain a desired position. Normal balance depends on information from the inner ear, other senses (such as sight and touch) and muscle movement. Gait Pattern of walking. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Gynecological condition caused by an infection (usually sexually transmitted) that spreads from the vagina to the upper parts of a woman's reproductive tract in the pelvic cavity. PID takes different courses in different women, but can cause abscesses and constant pain almost anywhere in the genital tract. If left untreated, it can cause infertility or more frequent periods. Severe cases may even spread to the liver and kidneys causing dangerous internal bleeding and death. Polycystic Kidney Disease A rare inherited condition in which the kidney are composed of multiple cysts. Kidney cysts are associated with an increased incidence of cerebral aneurysm. Symptoms usually appear later (if they do at all) and include blood in the urine, flank pain, excessive urination at night and abdominal pain. Individuals may also have elevated blood pressure. Chronic (end-stage renal disease) renal failure is the most common result in the 5th to 6th decades of life. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome PCOS is a disorder in which the ovaries produce excessive amounts of male hormones (androgens) and develop many small cysts. Symptoms commonly include heavy, irregular or missed periods as well as acne, excessive hair growth on the face, obesity and infertility. Piriformis Syndrome Piriformis syndrome occurs when the sciatic nerve passes through the piriformis muscle, as opposed to passing below it. This is seen in 12% of the population. Spasm of the piriformis muscle can mimic the pain of sciatica. This can be treated by muscle relaxants. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Parkinson's Disease.
