Nucleotides

Nucleotides

The components of DNA, consisting of phosphate, a sugar derivative and one of the following bases: adenine, cytosine, guanine, or thymine. They are represented by their initial letters in a nucleotide sequence.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

DNA
Deoxyribo-Nucleic acid. DNA molecules carry the genetic information necessary for the organization and functioning of most living cells and control the inheritance of characteristics.

Sugar
A class of carbohydrates that taste sweet. Sugar is a quick and easy fuel for the body to use. Types of sugar are lactose, glucose, fructose, and sucrose.

Adenine
A purine base found in RNA and DNA; in double-stranded DNA adenine pairs with the pyrimidine thymine.

Cytosine
One of the pyrimidine nitrogenous bases occurring in both DNA and RNA.

Guanine
(guanine triphosphate) One of the 4 types of nucleotides that make up DNA. Base pairs with cytosine by 3 hydrogen bonds.

Thymine
A nitrogenous base, one member of the base pair AT (adenine-thymine).

SIMILAR TERMS
--------------------------------------

Nuclear Medicine
Imaging technique where small amounts of radioactive substances (radio-isotopes) are injected into a patient to trace disease processes. Sometimes the radioactive substance may concentrate directly in an organ/tissue, but in most cases it has to be attached to a carrier molecule with a "preference" for a certain tissue or disease process. The concentrated radioactivity may be detected by a so-called gamma camera as typical "hot spots".

Nuclear medicine
The branch of medicine that deals with the use of radioisotopes in therapy and diagnosis.

Nuclear medicine imaging techniques
Techniques that are used in the diagnosis, management, treatment and prevention of disease. Nuclear medicine is unique in that it often allows for diagnostic information to be discerned prior to the onset of physical symptoms. It is used significantly in the areas of oncology, neurology, cardiology and orthopedics, among others.

Nuclear medicine scan
Image produced as the result of a nuclear medicine procedure.

Nuclear scan
Nuclear imaging is a method of producing images by detecting radiation from different parts of the body after the administration of a radioactive tracer material.

Nuclear scanning
An imaging procedure that views various parts of the body by injecting a very small dose of a radioactive substance into a vein.ÿ Different isotopes concentrate in different organs, and these concentrations are displayed.

Nuclear transfer
A procedure in which a nucleus from a donor cell is transferred into an enucleated egg or zygote (an egg or zygote from which the nucleus/pronuclei have been removed). The donor nucleus can come from a Germ cell or a somatic cell.

Nuclei
See nucleus.

Nucleus
Plural: nuclei. The compartment of a cell that contains the chromosomes.

Nucleus of the optic tract (NOT)
Receives input from directionally sensitive cells in the retina. Lesions produce deficits in tracking of moving stimuli.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS
--------------------------------------

Neuropathy
A disease of the nervous system. The three major forms in people with diabetes are peripheral neuropathy, autonomic neuropathy, and mononeuropathy. The most common form is peripheral neuropathy, which affects mainly the legs and feet.

Nocturnal emission
A nocturnal emission is an ejaculation of semen experienced by males during sleep. It is also called a "wet dream"; this term is also used figuratively for something very pleasurable but often imagined or hoped for.

Nucleotides

Nitric Oxide
A protohormone that generates cyclic GMP. Nitric oxide is a free radical.

Nervous system
The system of cells, tissues and organs that regulates the body's responses to internal and external stimuli. In vertebrae it consists of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, ganglia and parts of the receptor and effector organs.

Nephrology
The medical specialty which focuses on the treatment of disorders of the kidneys.

Nearsightedness
Focusing defect in which the eye is overpowered. Light rays coming from a distant object are brought to focus before reaching the retina. Requires a minus lens correction to "weaken" the eye optically and permit clear distance vision.

Nystagmus
Nystagmus is a rhythmic, repetitive, oscillatory eye movement. It may occur as a result of vestibular problems, as a result of visual problems, or as a result of certain brain stem or cerebellar abnormalities. Vestibular Nystagmus is characterized by a slow migration of the eyes in the wrong direction, followed by a sudden jerking back response.
