Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine

Imaging technique where small amounts of radioactive substances (radio-isotopes) are injected into a patient to trace disease processes. Sometimes the radioactive substance may concentrate directly in an organ/tissue, but in most cases it has to be attached to a carrier molecule with a "preference" for a certain tissue or disease process. The concentrated radioactivity may be detected by a so-called gamma camera as typical "hot spots".

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Disease
Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus.

Carrier
A large immunogenic molecule or particle to which an antigenic determinant is attached, allowing the determinant to become immunogenic.

Tissue
Biological tissue is a group of cells that perform a similar function. The study of tissues is known as histology, or, in connection with disease, histopathology. The classical tools for studying the tissues are the wax block, the tissue stain, and the optical microscope, though developments in electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and frozen sections have all added to the sum of knowledge in the last couple of decades.

SIMILAR TERMS
--------------------------------------

Nuclear medicine imaging techniques
Techniques that are used in the diagnosis, management, treatment and prevention of disease. Nuclear medicine is unique in that it often allows for diagnostic information to be discerned prior to the onset of physical symptoms. It is used significantly in the areas of oncology, neurology, cardiology and orthopedics, among others.

Nuclear medicine scan
Image produced as the result of a nuclear medicine procedure.

Nuclear scan
Nuclear imaging is a method of producing images by detecting radiation from different parts of the body after the administration of a radioactive tracer material.

Nuclear scanning
An imaging procedure that views various parts of the body by injecting a very small dose of a radioactive substance into a vein.ÿ Different isotopes concentrate in different organs, and these concentrations are displayed.

Nuclear transfer
A procedure in which a nucleus from a donor cell is transferred into an enucleated egg or zygote (an egg or zygote from which the nucleus/pronuclei have been removed). The donor nucleus can come from a Germ cell or a somatic cell.

Nuclei
See nucleus.

Nucleotides
The components of DNA, consisting of phosphate, a sugar derivative and one of the following bases: adenine, cytosine, guanine, or thymine. They are represented by their initial letters in a nucleotide sequence.

Nucleus
Plural: nuclei. The compartment of a cell that contains the chromosomes.

Nucleus of the optic tract (NOT)
Receives input from directionally sensitive cells in the retina. Lesions produce deficits in tracking of moving stimuli.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS
--------------------------------------

Neurotransmitter
Specialized chemical messenger (eg, acetylcholine, dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin) that sends a message from one nerve cell to another. Most neurotransmitters play different roles throughout the body, many of which are not yet known.

Non-insulin-dependent diabetes
A condition in which the body either makes too little insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it makes to convert blood glucose to energy. Type 2 diabetes may be controlled with diet, exercise, and weight loss, or may require oral medications and/or insulin injections.

Nutrients
Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals provided by food and necessary for growth and the maintenance of life.

Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder of sleep regulation that affects the control of sleep and wakefulness. The four classic symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations.

Natural Medicine
A term used to describe the philosophy of the particular alternative systems that emphasize Vis Medicatrix Naturae, "the healing power of nature." The therapeutic emphasis is on supporting or stimulating the organism’s self-healing processes, rather than treating the symptoms or the disease. The "healing power" of nature is found in the innate homeostatic and healing systems of the body and mind of the living organism, not in the natural medicinal substance or therapy. This is also sometimes call "vitalistic" medicine.

Nuclear Medicine

Norco
Hydrocodone (chemical synonym: dihydrocodeinone; trade names: Vicodin, Anexsia, Dicodid, Hycodan, Hycomine, Lorcet, Lortab, Norco, Tussionex) is an opioid derived from either of the natural occuring opiates -- codeine or thebaine. Hydrocodone is an orally active analgesic and antitussive Schedule II narcotic which is marketed in multi-ingredient Schedule III products. The therapeutic dose of 5 mg to 10 mg is pharmacologically equivalent to 30 to 60 mg of oral codeine.

Noncomedogenic
Not likely to cause comedones.

Neurologic Oncology
The study and treatment of cancers of the brain and nervous system.

Neuron
A cell specialized to conduct and generate electrical impulses and to carry information from one part of the brain to another.

Nigral
Of or referring to the substantia nigra.
