Non-Q-wave MI
Non-Q-wave MIA MI or heart attack that does not cause changes on the electrocardiogram (ECG) however, chemical markers in the blood indicate that damage has occurred to the heart muscle. In non-Q-wave MI, a clot may block the coronary artery for a period of time, and then break up by itself or collateral circulation may help to restore blood flow to the area of ischemia (lack of blood supply). The size of damage is fairly small; therefore, overall function of the heart is usually maintained. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Heart The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system. Electrocardiogram ECG or EKG. A test that records the electrical activity of the heart, shows abnormal rhythms (arrhythmias or dysrhythmias), and detects heart muscle damage. Blood The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues. Muscle Tissue made up of bundles of long, slender cells that contract when stimulated. Clot A jelly-like mass of blood. Artery A blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body. Collateral In anatomy, a collateral is a subordinate or accessory part. A collateral is also a side branch, as of a blood vessel or nerve. Circulation The flow of blood through the body. Includes the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries. Ischemia Decreased flow of oxygenated blood to an organ due to obstruction in an artery. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Non-inferiority trial A trial with the primary objective of showing that the response to the investigational product is not clinically inferior to a comparative agent (active or placebo control). See also equivalence trial. Non-insulin-dependent diabetes A condition in which the body either makes too little insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it makes to convert blood glucose to energy. Type 2 diabetes may be controlled with diet, exercise, and weight loss, or may require oral medications and/or insulin injections. Non-invasive procedures A diagnostic effort or treatment that does not require entering the body or puncturing the skin. Non-stress test A test for abnormalities of the fetal heartbeat in which a monitor is used to listen to the fetus's heart while the mother is at rest. (In a stress test, the fetal heartbeat is monitored in response to uterine contractions.) PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Neurocardiogenic Syncope (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Dysautonomia) Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous syndrome. Causes symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, increased heart rate, and other symptoms. See syncope. Nicotine Nicotine is a substance found in cigarettes and considered an addictive drug. It causes changes in the brain that make people want to use it more and more. In addition, addictive drugs cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. NIH National Institute of Health Noncompliance Failure to follow instructions given by health care providers, such as not taking medication as prescribed or not attending follow-up appointments. Noninvasive Nonpenetrating. Noninvasive tests or procedures do not penetrate the body and are usually considered low-risk and painless. Non-Q-wave MI NOTA The National Organ Transplant Act, passed by Congress in 1984, outlawed the sale of human organs and initiated the development of a national system for organ sharing and a scientific registry to collect and report transplant data. Nuclear scan Nuclear imaging is a method of producing images by detecting radiation from different parts of the body after the administration of a radioactive tracer material.
