Myocarditis




Myocarditis

Inflammation of the heart muscle.

Inflammation
A reaction to an injury to the body - by infection, chemicals or physical agents. The symptoms can be - depending on the location of the injury- redness, swelling, heat and pain. The purpose of the inflammation is to dilute and destroy the agent causing the inflammation. To do this, the immune system starts a cascade of actions that causes active cells to gather at the affected location. It is these cells and fluids that cause the redness, swelling, heat and pain.

Heart
The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system.

Muscle
Tissue made up of bundles of long, slender cells that contract when stimulated.

Myocardial Biopsy (Cardiac biopsy)
An invasive procedure that involves using a bioptome (a small catheter with a grasping device on the end) to obtain a small piece of heart muscle tissue that is sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Myocardial infarction
Or heart attack. Occurs when one of more regions of the heart muscle experience a severe or prolonged decrease in oxygen supply caused by a blocked blood flow to the heart muscle.

Myocardial Infarction
Also called a heart attack; results from permanent damage to an area of the heart muscle. This happens when the blood supply to the area is interrupted because of narrowed or blocked blood vessels.

Myocardial infarction (Heart attack)
A sudden obstruction of blood flow through a coronary artery that results in the death of heart tissue. The immediate cause of a myocardial infarction is usually a thrombus that forms near the site of ruptured plaque.

Myocardial ischemia
Insufficient blood flow to part of the heart.

Myocardium
The muscle wall of the heart.

Myoclonus
Jerking, involuntary movements of the arms and legs. May occur normally during sleep.

Myocrisin
Intramuscular gold preparation (Sodium aurothiomalate).

The membrane covering canals and cavities that open on the outside of the body, such as the gastrointestinal tract and the respiratory tract. Also called mucous membrane.

Muscle pain.

Mass effect
Damage to the brain due the bulk of a tumor, the blockage of fluid, or excess accumulation of fluid within the skull.
