Myeloma
Myeloma A tumour of plasma cells, generally secreting a single species of immunoglobulin. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Plasma The watery, liquid part of the blood in which the red blood cells, the white blood cells, and platelets are suspended. Immunoglobulin A serum protein involved in immunity. An antibody. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Myelin The lipid substance forming a sheath around the axons of certain nerve fibers. Myelodysplastic Syndrome A group of neoplasms that originate in a primitive multipotential hematopoietic cell.. About half of the cases are mild to moderate anemias accompanied by mild to moderately reduced white cell and platelet counts. Often, these are not progressive but they have a heightened propensity to evolve into acute myelogenous leukemia. The other half of the cases are a type of low blast count leukemia that may be associated with severe white cell and platelet deficits. Many of the patients affected require transfusion therapy, have a propensity to infection or to bleeding, and frequently progress to more overt leukemia. Myelogram A specific X-ray study that uses an injection of a dye or contrast material into the spinal canal to allow careful evaluation of the spinal canal and nerve roots. Myeloid leukemia One form of cancer of the blood-forming tissue, primarily the bone marrow and lymph nodes. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Mitogen A substance that stimulates the proliferation of many different clones of lymphocytes. Mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) When lymphocytes from two individuals are cultured together, a proliferative response is generally observed, as the result of reactions of T cells of one individual to MHC antigens on the other individual's cells. Monoclonal Literally, coming from a single clone. A clone is the progeny of a single cell. In immunology, monoclonal generally describes a preparation of antibody that is monogenous, or cells of a single specificity. Monocyte Large circulating white cell, 2-10% of total white cells, phagocytic, indented nucleus. Migrates to tissues, where it is known as a macrophage. Monokines Soluble substances secreted by monocytes, which have a variety of effects on other cells. Myeloma Male hermaphroditism A generic term applied to several different syndromes of birth-defective ambiguity of the sex organs occurring in the 46,XY gonadal male. The defect is induced in fetal life by a deficiency of hormonal masculinization secondary to either the quantity or type of male hormone available, or to insensitivity of the tissues to male hormone. Manic-depressive cyclicity In manic-depressive illness, the repeated sequence of a period of being high (manic) followed by one of being low (depressive). Marauding Raiding; taking by force. Marauding paraphilia One of a group of paraphilias characterized by triumph wrested developmentally from sexuoerotic tragedy by means of a strategy that incorporates sinful lust into the lovemap on the condition that it be stolen, abducted, or imposed by force, since it irrevocably defiles saintly love. Masochism A paraphilia of the sacrificial/expiatory type in which sexuoerotic arousal and facilitation or attainment of orgasm are responsive to, and contingent on being the recipient of abuse, torture, punishment, discipline, humiliation, obedience, and servitude [named after-Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, 1836-1895, Austrian author and masochist] The reciprocal paraphilic condition is sadism.
