Myeloid leukemia
Myeloid leukemia One form of cancer of the blood-forming tissue, primarily the bone marrow and lymph nodes. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Cancer Any malignant growth or tumor caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division; it may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or the blood stream. Tissue Biological tissue is a group of cells that perform a similar function. The study of tissues is known as histology, or, in connection with disease, histopathology. The classical tools for studying the tissues are the wax block, the tissue stain, and the optical microscope, though developments in electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and frozen sections have all added to the sum of knowledge in the last couple of decades. Bone Bone refers either to a hardened connective tissue or to one of the individual structures, or organs, into which it is formed, found in many animals. Bones support body structures, protect internal organs, and (in conjunction with muscles) facilitate movement; are also involved with cell formation, calcium metabolism, and mineral storage. The bones of an animal are, collectively, known as the skeleton. Marrow The tissue which fills the cavities of most bones; the medulla. In the larger cavities it is commonly very fatty, but in the smaller cavities it is much less fatty, and red or reddish in color. Lymph Consists primarily of a clear, yellowish fluid and white blood cells. Found in the lymphatic system. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Myelin The lipid substance forming a sheath around the axons of certain nerve fibers. Myelodysplastic Syndrome A group of neoplasms that originate in a primitive multipotential hematopoietic cell.. About half of the cases are mild to moderate anemias accompanied by mild to moderately reduced white cell and platelet counts. Often, these are not progressive but they have a heightened propensity to evolve into acute myelogenous leukemia. The other half of the cases are a type of low blast count leukemia that may be associated with severe white cell and platelet deficits. Many of the patients affected require transfusion therapy, have a propensity to infection or to bleeding, and frequently progress to more overt leukemia. Myelogram A specific X-ray study that uses an injection of a dye or contrast material into the spinal canal to allow careful evaluation of the spinal canal and nerve roots. Myeloma A tumour of plasma cells, generally secreting a single species of immunoglobulin. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Myocrisin Intramuscular gold preparation (Sodium aurothiomalate). MOP Myositis ossificans progressiva. Ossification (bone formation) of striated muscle. Myositis Ossificans progressiva Ossification (bone formation) of striated muscle. Multicentric reticulohistiocytosis A rare disorder which may be mistaken for rheumatoid arthritis due to the presence of nodules and an erosive arthritis. Malaria A disease caused by a parasite that is transmitted person-to-person by the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. These mosquitoes are present in the tropics and subtropics in almost all countries. Malaria is the most deadly of all tropical parasitic diseases. Myeloid leukemia Melleril Used in the treatment of schizophrenia, this medication consists of thioridazine HCl and is made by Novartis. Methergin Used in the management of third stage labor, this medication consists of methylergometrine hydrogen maleate and is made by Novartis. Metopirone Metopirone (metyrapone-adrenocorticostatic agent) is used in the treatment of Cushing's Syndrome. Miacalcic Used in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, this medicine is made by Novartis and consists of synthetic salmon calcitonin-regulator of calcium homeostasis. Miflonide Used in the treatment of bronchial asthma, this medication consists of budesonide-glucocorticoid. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Myeloid leukemia.
