Leukocyte

White blood cell.

Blood
The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues.

Cell
Fundamental structural unit of all life. The cell consists primarily of an outer plasma membrane, which separates it from the environment; the genetic material (DNA), which encodes heritable information for the maintainance of life; and the cytoplasm, a heterogeneous assemblage of ions, molecules, and fluid.

Leukemia
Cancer of white blood cells. Acute leukemias are characterized by the presence of "blasts," which are immature white blood cells. Large quantities of blasts generally overgrow the bone marrow, leaving very little space for normal bone marrow cells. This type generally requires immediate treatment. Chronic leukemias are those characterized by a large and uncontrolled growth of more mature white blood cells. These types of leukemias tend not to progress as rapidly, and treatment is often milder than that of acute leukemias.

Inflammation of the white matter of the brain.

Reduction in the number of leukocytes in the blood.

Thick, white patches in the mouth that may become malignant.

Local anesthesia
Partial or complete elimination of pain sensation, in the immediate vicinity of its application or injection.

Operation to remove prolapsed disc - involves removal of part of a vertebra.

Lasegue sign
Pain in the back of the leg on flexing a patient's hip and knee and then extending the knee while the hip is flexed. Results from dural irritation, usually by a prolapsed disc.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
Results from congenital deficiency of hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (HGPRT) - resulting in hyperuricaemia. Causes gout (even in a baby), mental retardation and choreoathetosis.

A form of Histiocytosis-X

Leukocyte

Lhermitte's sign
Occurs on neck flexion and implies spinal cord compression or other abnormality. Patient experiences a sensation like an electric shock in the limbs. Most common in cervical myelopathy due to stenosis resulting from degenerative change and demyelination (multiple sclerosis).

Libman-Sachs endocarditis
Sterile endocarditis which occurs in SLE.

Ligament
A band of tough tissue which restrains joint movement and confers stability on a joint.

Livedo reticularis
A 'marbled' appearance of the skin which may occur either as an isolated phenomenon or as part of the antiphospholipid antibody syndrome.

Lofgren's syndrome
Bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy and erythema nodosum due to sarcoidosis.
