Laryngectomy
Laryngectomy Surgical removal of part or all of the larynx (usually to treat cancer of the larynx). RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Larynx The larynx is a muscular tube in the neck that allows air to pass from the throat to the trachea (windpipe). The larynx contains the vocal cords, which allow people and animals to make sounds. The larynx has cartilage that opens to allow air into the trachea. Cancer Any malignant growth or tumor caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division; it may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or the blood stream. Laryngoscope A device used by ACLS personnel to look down the throat to insert an endotracheal tube. The doctor inserts a laparoscope (see above) and other surgical instruments through small holes in the abdomen. The camera allows the doctor to see the gallbladder on a television screen. The doctor removes the gallbladder through the holes. Laparoscopic lymphadenectomy The removal of pelvic lymph nodes with a laparoscope. Laparoscopy A test that uses a laparoscope to look at and take tissue from the inside of the body. Large intestine The part of the intestine that goes from the cecum to the rectum. The large intestine absorbs water from stool and changes it from a liquid to a solid form. The large intestine is 5 feet long and includes the appendix, cecum, colon, and rectum. Also called colon. Laryngectomy Lavage A cleaning of the stomach and colon. Uses a special drink and enemas. See also bowel prep. Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) Procedure for treating cervical dysplasia in which a fine wire loop and low-energy current are used to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix. Laxatives Medicines to relieve long-term constipation. Used only if other methods fail. Also called cathartics. Ligaments Connect the bones and keep joints stable.
