Inner cell mass

Inner cell mass

The cluster of cells inside the blastocyst. Before implantation, these can give rise to embryonic stem cell lines. After implantation, the inner cell mass gives rise to all the tissues of the fetus, as well as some of the membranes around it.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Cluster
In epidemiology, an aggregation of cases of a disease or another health-related condition, such as a cancer or birth defect, closely grouped in time and place. The number of cases in the cluster may or may not exceed the expected number. This is determined by cluster analysis, a set of statistical methods used to analyze clusters.

Blastocyst
The developmental stage of the fertilized ovum by the time it is ready to implant; formed from the morula and consists of an inner cell mass, an internal cavity, and an outer layer of cells (the trophoblast).

Implantation
The process by which an embryo becomes attached to the inside of the uterus (7-14 days in humans).

Embryonic
Undeveloped, related to the embryo.

Cell
Fundamental structural unit of all life. The cell consists primarily of an outer plasma membrane, which separates it from the environment; the genetic material (DNA), which encodes heritable information for the maintainance of life; and the cytoplasm, a heterogeneous assemblage of ions, molecules, and fluid.

Fetus
The stage of human development from 10 weeks' gestation until birth.

Membranes
Also know as the bag of waters, this thin sac contains the amniotic fluid and the fetus. The membranes will either rupture spontaneously during labor or be ruptured to speed up labor.

Inflammation
A reaction to an injury to the body - by infection, chemicals or physical agents. The symptoms can be - depending on the location of the injury- redness, swelling, heat and pain. The purpose of the inflammation is to dilute and destroy the agent causing the inflammation. To do this, the immune system starts a cascade of actions that causes active cells to gather at the affected location. It is these cells and fluids that cause the redness, swelling, heat and pain.

Intracutan test
Intracutan tests are used to diagnose allergies. A small amount of allergen extract is injected under the skin on your arm. If the area becomes itchy, reddish and swelling you may have an allergy.

Implantation
The process by which an embryo becomes attached to the inside of the uterus (7-14 days in humans).

In utero
Latin: literally, "in the uterus."

Informed consent
A process in which a patient gives written consent (agreement) to undergo a medical procedure after having been provided with information about the nature of the procedure, risks, potential benefits, alternatives, and so on by his or her doctor.

Inner cell mass

Institutional review board (IRB)
An administrative body in an institution (such as a hospital or university) established to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in research activities conducted under the auspices of that institution. The IRB has the authority to approve, require modifications in, or disapprove research activities in its jurisdiction, as specified by both federal regulations and local institutional policy.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection
An assisted reproductive method in which a sperm is injected directly into an unfertilized egg with a microscopic needle; this procedure is used in cases of severe male factor infertility.

IVF
See In vitro fertilization

Immunity
When a body's immune system helps fend off disease.

Immunization
Natural immunity provided by antibodies or induced immunity via inoculations.
