Incubator
Incubator A box-like apparatus in which premature babies are kept at constant and suitable temperature. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Premature The term used to describe babies born before 37 weeks of gestation. Fewer than 10 percent of babies arrive this early. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Incubate To provide the proper conditions for growth. Incubus An evil spirit or demon that assumes the form of a male and is supposed to lie upon sleeping people, chiefly women, and to have sexual intercourse with them; a nightmare. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Immunity When a body's immune system helps fend off disease. Immunization Natural immunity provided by antibodies or induced immunity via inoculations. In loco parentis Latin for "In place of a parent," referring to the rights and duties of a guardian or organization. In utero surgery Surgery done in the uterus to correct an abnormality in a fetus. Incompetent cervix When the muscles of the cervix are too weak to hold a baby through pregnancy. A stitch may be placed at the opening of the cervix to hold it together. See cerclage. Incubator Individualized family service plan (IFSP) A group of services available for families with a child under the age of 2 who has a disability or chronic illness. Infant A child under a year of age. Infant mortality The death of an infant during the first year of life. Injection Medication which is put into the body via a syringe and a needle.
