Ileocolitis
Ileocolitis Irritation of the lower part of the small intestine (ileum) and colon. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Intestine The tube involved in digestion and extending from the stomach to the anus. Consists of the small intestine and the large intestine. Colon Another name for the large intestine. The section of the large intestine extending from the cecum to the rectum. An adult colon is approximately five to six feet in length and is responsible for absorbing water and forming, storing and expelling waste. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Ileostomy An operation that makes it possible for stool to leave the body after the colon and rectum are removed in which an opening is made in the abdomen and the bottom of the small intestine (ileum) attaches to it. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Intromission The insertion of one part into another; in sexual intercourse, the insertion of the penis into the vagina. Inviolacy The right to be free from being harmed, harassed, or encroached upon. Irrumatio Actively thrusting of the penis into the mouth; as contrasted to fellatio, which finds the mouth and tongue actively stimulating the penis through sucking and licking. Ileal Related to the ileum, the lowest end of the small intestine. Ileitis See Crohn's Disease. Ileocolitis Ileostomy An operation that makes it possible for stool to leave the body after the colon and rectum are removed in which an opening is made in the abdomen and the bottom of the small intestine (ileum) attaches to it. Ileum The lower end of the small intestine. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) A type of antibody, formed to protect the body from infection, which attaches to mast cells in the respiratory and intestinal tracts and may cause allergic rhinitis, asthma, or eczema. Immunoglobulins Antibodies or proteins found in blood and tissue fluids produced by cells of the immune system to bind to substances in the body that are recognized as foreign antigens. Immunoglobulins sometimes bind to antigens that are not necessarily a threat to health and provoke an allergic reaction. Immunosuppresive medications Medications that suppress the body's immune system, used to minimize rejection of transplanted organs.
