High Density Lipoprotein (HDL)
High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) The "good" cholesterol that helps remove cholesterol from cells. If insulin levels go up, then HDL levels go down. The lower your HDL level, the more likely you are to suffer cardiovascular complications. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Cholesterol A substance similar to fat that is found in the blood, muscles, liver, brain, and other body tissues. Insulin The hormone that drives incoming nutrients into cells for storage. Excess insulin is the primary pillar of aging. Cardiovascular Of, relating to, or involving the heart and the blood vessels. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- High blood pressure Blood pressure that is above the normal range. High Blood Pressure When the blood flows through the vessels at a greater than normal force. High blood pressure strains the heart; harms the arteries; and increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney problems. Also called hypertension. High Point Regional Health System High Point Regional Health System is a hospital in High Point, North Carolina (USA). High Prairie Health Complex The High Prairie Health Complex is a hospital in High Prairie, Alberta, Canada. High-risk babies Babies with a greater likelihood of developing an illness or dyingwithin the first few months of life. High-risk babies include those ofmothers infected with HIV or who have a drug or alcohol dependency. High-risk pregnancy A pregnancy with a higher than normal risk of developing complications. Such pregnancies include those with multiple fetuses or Rh incompatibility, and when the mother has had problems with miscarriage, pre-term labor, or placenta previa in earlier pregnancies. Highland Park Care Center The Highland Park Care Center is a hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Highlands Hospital and Health The Highlands Hospital and Health is a hospital in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, United States. Highlands Regional Medical Center Highlands Regional Medical Center is a hospital in Prestonsburg, Kentucky (USA). Highline Community Hospital Specialty Center The Highline Community Hospital Specialty Center is a hospital in Tukwila, Washington, United States. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Hemoglobin Hemoglobin is a substance contained within the red blood cells and is responsible for their color. It has the unique property of combining reversibly with oxygen and is the medium by which oxygen is transported within the body. It takes up oxygen as blood passes through the lungs and releases it as blood passes through the tissues. Hormone A chemical substance formed in the body that is carried in the bloodstream to affect another part of the body; an example is thyroid hormone, produced by the thyroid gland in the neck, which affects growth, temperature regulation, metabolic rate, and other body functions. Hepatitis Inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, alcohol, toxic chemicals, and certain drugs. Symptoms include jaundice (yellowish skin caused by the buildup of bile pigments in the body), fever, appetite loss and gastrointestinal upset. Haploid A single set of chromosomes (half the full set of genetic material), present in the egg and sperm cells of animals and in the egg and pollen cells of plants. Human beings have 23 chromosomes in their reproductive cells. Hermaphrodite An individual with both male and female genitalia. High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Hippocampus The portion of the limbic system in the brain that integrates incoming nerve impulses to the hypothalamus. It is also the memory center of the brain. Hormones Biological compounds that communicate information at a distance. Hormones require specific receptors to begin their biological action and use second messengers to initiate the cellular process that uses that information. Hormone Releasing Factors Hormones released from the hypothalamus that directly affect the pituitary and initiate the release of other hormones into the bloodstream. Many hormone releasing factors use cyclic AMP as their secondary messengers. Hyperinsulinemia The excess production of insulin. This is usually a consequence of insulin resistance in which the cells do not respond to insulin to reduce blood glucose levels. Hypothalamus The portion of the brain's limbic system that integrates incoming information, and either increases or decreases the release of certain hormones that instruct the pituitary gland to release hormones.
