Heterosexual
Heterosexual Characterized by other-sex contact, either as a genital act or as a long-term sexuoerotic status. It is analogous to right-handedness in being in conformity with the norm and therefore is not pathological in itself, though subject to other pathology. A heterosexual person is able to fall in love with, and become the pairbonded sexuoerotic partner of only a person of the other morphologic sex. Paraphilias occur predominantly in association with heterosexual pairing. The ideation and affective state, exclusive of the behavioral component, is heterophilia.
RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Genital Having to do with the sex organs. Sexuoerotic The sexual and the erotic experienced as a unity, with more emphasis on sexual behavior than erotic imagery. Status Indicated degree of medical urgency for patients awaiting transplants. Analogous In anatomy, similar in appearance or function but otherwise different. Two structures may be analogous if they serve the same purpose but differ evolutionary in origin as, for example, human and insect legs. As compared to homologous. Pathology Study of disease. Love The personal experience and manifest expression of being attached or bonded to another person. There is sacred and profane love, and affectional and erotic love. The word is also used in the vernacular as a synonym for like. Sex An individual's gender classification - male or female. Association 1. In dysmorphology (the study of birth defects), the nonrandom occurrence in two or more individuals of a pattern of multiple anomalies (birth defects) not known to be a malformation syndrome (such as Down syndrome), a malformation sequence (of events) or what is called a polytopic field defect (in which all of the defects are concentrated in one particular area of the body). An example of an association in dysmorphology is the VACTERL association of birth defects. 2. In genetics, the occurrence together of two or more characteristics more often than would be expected by chance alone. An example of association involves a feature on the surface of white blood cells called HLA (HLA stands for human leukocyte antigen). A particular HLA type, HLA type B-27, is associated with an increased risk for a number of diseases including ankylosing spondylitis. The extent of the association is enormous. Ankylosing spondylitis is 87 times more likely to occur in people with HLA B-27 than in the general population. Pairing A method by which subjects are selected so that two subjects with similar characteristics (for example, weight, smoking habits) are assigned to a set, but one receives Treatment A and the other receives Treatment B. Ideation In mental life, the collective representation of thoughts and ideas presently recognized, recalled from memory, or projected into the future, singly or in combination. Heterophile antigen A cross-reacting antigen that appears in widely ranging species such as humans and bacteria. Heterophilia The condition in which love and lust are attached to those of the other sex. A condition of being in which sexuoerotic arousal and facilitation or attainment of orgasm are responsive to, and dependent upon a partner of the other morphologic sex. Heterophobia The condition in which those whose love and lust are attached to persons of the other sex are dreaded or feared. Heteroplasmy An atypical condition characterized by the presence of more than one type of mitochondrial DNA in a single individual. Normally, each individual has only one type of mitochondrial DNA, inherited from his or her mother through the egg at fertilization. (Mitochondria from the sperm are systematically eliminated by the egg at fertilization.) Heterosexualism Other-sex contact, either as a genital act or as a long term sexuoerotic status. It's full manifestation includes falling in love. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Hemisphere As applied to the brain, either its left or its right half. Hermaphroditism Having genital attributes of both sexes. Some invertebrates are simultaneous hermaphrodites, and some fish are sequential hermaphrodites that change from male to female, or vice versa, once or more often in the course of a lifetime. In the human species, hermaphroditism is a form of birth defect, also known as intersexuality. It is defined as male or female hermaphroditism, if only testes or ovaries are present, respectively; as true hermaphroditism if both tissues are found as in ovotestes, and as gonadally dysgenic [dysgenetic?] when neither tissue is clearly differentiated. Human hermaphrodites do not have the complete sex organs of both sexes. A congenital condition of ambiguity of the reproductive structures so that the sex of the individual at birth is not clearly defined as exclusively male or exclusively female. The condition is named for Hermes and Aphrodite, the Greek god and goddess of love. Heterogeneous Dissimilar in type, and having different or opposing characteristics.
