Giant cell arteritis
Giant cell arteritis A vasculitic disorder which presents with head pain and scalp tenderness and a high ESR. Sudden loss of vision may occur due to retinal artery occlusion. Part of the polymyalgia rheumatica disease spectrum. Also known as cranial or temporal arteritis. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Pain An unpleasant sensory or emotional experience primarily associated with tissue damage, or described in terms of tissue damage, or both. ESR Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate. A blood test commonly used to detect/measure inflammation. Vision The sense of sight. Retinal Light-absorbing portion of rhodopsin. The absorption of light causes retinal to change from 11-cis to 11-trans configuration Artery A blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body. Occlusion Closure. Relationship of the upper and lower teeth upon closure. Disease Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus. Cranial The anatomical term for towards the head; also the general term for of the head. i.e. the lungs are cranial to the pelvis. See Caudal/Inferior/Superior Temporal Having to do with the side of the head. Arteritis Inflammation of blood vessels (arteries). Causes problems in the organs or tissues supplied by those arteries. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Giant cell tumor of bone A tumor of bone characterized by massive destruction of the end (epiphysis) of a long bone. The site most commonly struck by this tumor is the knee -- the far end of the femur and the near end of the tibia. The tumor is often coated by new bony growth. It causes pain, restricts movement, and is usually cancerous. Treatment is by surgery, usually followed by chemotherapy. Giant cell tumor, malignant A type of bone tumor characterized by massive destruction of bone near the end (epiphysis) of a long bone. The site most commonly struck by this tumor is the knee -- the far end of the femur and the near end of the tibia. The tumor is often coated by new bony growth. It causes pain and restricts movement. Treatment is by surgery, usually followed by chemotherapy. Giant hypertrophic gastritis A premalignant disorder of the stomach characterized by overgrowth of the stomach lining (the gastric mucosa) and hypoalbuminemia (low blood serum level of albumin) due to loss of albumin by the stomach. The abnormalities of the stomach are highly characteristic with giant folds, excess mucus secretion by the lining of the stomach, and hypochlorhydria (decreased acid secretion by the stomach). The disease tends to lead to stomach cancer. Giant platelet syndrome This condition is a primary problem of platelets in which the platelets lack the ability to stick adequately to injured blood vessel walls and as a result of this problem there is abnormal bleeding. Giantism Abnormal growth of the body due to an excessive amount of growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Gum recession Exposure of dental roots due to shrinkage of the gums as a result of abrasion, periodontal disease or surgery. Garrod's pads Benign fibrous subcutaneous nodules found on the extensor surface of finger proximal interphalangeal joints. May be mistaken for rheumatoid nodules. Gaucher's disease Deficiency of acid glucosidase. Glucosyl ceramide accumulates in the reticuloendothelial cells in bone marrow, spleen and lymph nodes and may cause polyarthralgia and osteonecrosis of the hip. Genu recurvatum Hyperextension of the knee resulting from hypermobility. Geode Large subchondral cyst. Giant cell arteritis Goniometer A device used for measuring the range of joint movement. Golfer's elbow Medial epicondylitis. See 'enthesopathy'. Gottron's sign Slightly scaly and raised papules on the extensor surface of small hand joints - seen i dermatomyositis. Gout A condition in which too much urate (a normally-occurring body substance) may accumulate and give rise to a (crystal-related) arthritis. This may occur due to a variety of causes. Gower's sign Using the hands when attempting to stand. Indicates the presence of muscular weakness. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Giant cell arteritis.
