Gerontology The science of aging and age-related phenomena. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Science 1. A continuous process whose basic purposes are to make phenomena recognizable and to predict outcomes, and whose fundamental activities comprise|(a) observing and describing phenomena and developing general conclusions about them; (b) integrating new data with organized observations that have been confirmed; (c) formulating testable hypotheses based on the results of such integration; (d) testing such hypotheses under controlled, repeatable conditions; (e) observing the results of such testing, recording them unambiguously, and interpreting them clearly; and (f) actively seeking criticism from participants in science. 2. Knowledge from science. 3. A scientific domain (e.g., genetics). 4. Knowledge from a particular scientific domain. 5. Any system or method characterized by the application of scientific principles to practical ends (e.g., culinary science). 6. Any disciplined, systematized area of study. 7. Methodological activity, training, or study. 8. Any activity that ostensibly requires study and method. 9. Knowledge from experience. 10. A developed ability. 11. The state of knowing. Aging The process of becoming older, a process that is genetically determined and environmentally modulated. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Gerontalism Impersonating an older person and being treated as one by a partner--one of the stigmatic/eligibilic paraphilias. Gerontological research The study and research that deals with diseases and problems specific to old people. Gerontophilia A paraphilia of the stigmatic/eligibilic type in which the partner must be parental or grandparental in age. The technical term for the reciprocal paraphilic condition in which a younger person must impersonate a parent or grandparent is paraphilic. 2. The condition in which a young adult is responsive to and dependent on erotic/sexual activity with a much older partner in order to obtain erotic arousal and facilitate or achieve orgasm. Gerovital Gerovital H3 is a controversial preparation, developed during the 1950s in Romania by Dr. Ana Aslan (1896?–May 20, 1988) It was and is promoted by its advocates as an effective anti-aging treatment. During Gerovital's "jet-set" heyday, Dr. Aslan's clinic gave Gerovital treatments to a stellar array of celebrities and dignitaries PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Genital Having to do with the sex organs. Genital penetration phobia A hypophilic condition or syndrome, variable in etiology, or irrational panic and disabling fear that prevents having the vagina entered by something, particularly the penis, or the penis enveloped in something, particularly the vagina. Genitalia The sex organs, internal and external. The word is often used to refer to the external organs only. Genitoerotic Erotic feeling and activity specifically involving the genitals in imagery and/or practice. Glucocorticoids Generic name for hormones secreted by the adrenocortical glands that are not mineralocorticoids.
