Genitals

External sex organs: the penis and testicles in a male and the labia in a female.

Penis
The male sex organ, which consists of a head called glans, and the shaft or body. At the tip of the glans is the urethral opening, through which urine and semen leave the body. The shaft or the body of the penis is made of spongy tissue and blood vessels. And it fills with blood an grows in size (becomes erect) during sexual excitement.

Labia
In the female sex organs the outside lips (labia majora) and the inside lips (labia minora) that converge to cover the clitoris with the clitoral hood. Singular: labium.

Female
The traditional definition of female was "an individual of the sex that bears young" or "that produces ova or eggs". However, things are not so simple today. Female can be defined by physical appearance, by chromosome constitution (see Female chromosome complement), or by gender identification. Female chromosome complement: The large majority of females have a 46, XX chromosome complement (46 chromosomes including two X chromosomes). A minority of females have other chromosome constitutions such as 45,X (45 chromosomes including only one X chromosome) and 47,XXX (47 chromosomes including three X chromosomes).

The sex organs, internal and external. The word is often used to refer to the external organs only.

Erotic feeling and activity specifically involving the genitals in imagery and/or practice.

Genitourinary (GU)
Pertaining to the genital and urinary systems.

Genitourinary system
The genitals and urinary organs.

Gamete intra-Fallopian tube transfer
An infertility treatment similar to IVF that involves removing eggs from a woman's ovaries, inserting them into the Fallopian tube with sperm, and allowing them to fertilize on their own.

General practitioner
A physician who provides basic care. Unlike like a family physician, who must complete a three-year residency in obstetrics, pediatrics, internal medicine, and surgery, the general practitioner does not undergo specialized training after medical school.

A disease or condition caused by an abnormality in a person's genetic blueprint. Gestational age
The age of the fetus while in the uterus, counted from the first day of the last menstrual period.

Gestational diabetes mellitus
Diabetes (when blood sugar levels become too high) that develops duringpregnancy. Can be treated, and usually disappears after pregnancy.

Grasping reflex
A newborn's reflexive grab at an object, such as a finger, when ittouches her hand. Her hold may be strong enough for you to pull her to asitting position; the reflex lasts until a baby is 3 or 4 months old.

Gravida
The medical term for a pregnant woman.

Gross motor skills
Movements that use the large muscles in the arms, legs, and torso - such as running and jumping.
