Galactosemia
GalactosemiaA disease present at birth caused by a genetic lack of an enzyme needed to metabolize galactose into glucose. May result in mental retardation, cataracts and liver damage. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Disease Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus. Genetic Hereditary. Having to do with the genes. Enzyme A cellular protein whose shape allows it to hold together several other molecules in close proximity to each other. In this way, enzymes are able to induce chemical reactions in other substances with little expenditure of energy and without being changed themselves. Basically, an enzyme acts as a catalyst. Galactose A type of sugar found in milk products and sugar beets. It is also made by the body. It is considered a nutritive sweetener because it has calories. Glucose The only simple carbohydrate that circulates in the bloodstream. Glucose is the primary fuel used by the brain. It can also be stored in the liver and muscles in a polymer form known as glycogen. Retardation Delay or halt of any process such as mental or physical development. Cataracts Partial or complete opacity on or in the lens or capsule of one or both eyes, impairing vision or causing blindness. The many kinds of cataract are classified by their morphology (size, shape, location) or etiology (cause and time of occurrence). Liver The largest organ in the body. The liver carries out many important functions, such as making bile, changing food into energy, and cleaning alcohol and poisons from the blood. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Galactorrhea Excessive production of breast milk. Galactose A type of sugar found in milk products and sugar beets. It is also made by the body. It is considered a nutritive sweetener because it has calories. Galantamine Galantamine (trade name Reminyl) is a medication used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Grandiose delusion A delusion of inflated worth, power, knowledge, identity, or special relationship to a deity or famous person. Gustatory hallucination A hallucination involving the perception of taste (usually unpleasant). Glascow coma scale The system used to evaluate and classify, unconsious patients. The scale ranges to 15, which is normal. It is often referred to as "GCS" by healthcare workers. Glottis The opening into the vocal cords. Galactorrhea Excessive production of breast milk. Galactosemia Gall The bile produced in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Gallbladder The storage sac for bile, located below the liver. Gallstone A stone-like mass that forms in the gallbladder. Gamma globulin Blood protein that contains most antibodies. Used in the temporary prevention of hepatitis and as treatment for disorders with antibody deficiencies. Ganglion cyst A benign, knot-like, cystic tumor on a tendon sheath.
