First cranial nerve
First cranial nerveThe olfactory nerve, the nerve that permits the sense of smell. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Olfactory Having to do with the sense of smell. Nerve Tissue that conveys sensation, temperature, position information to the brain. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University is a hospital in Nanjing, China. First degree burn A superficial burn with similar characteristics to a typical sun burn. The skin is red in color and sensation is intact. In fact, it is usually somewhat painful. First Phase Insulin Release Release of insulin into the bloodstream from the beta cell within a few minutes after the blood glucose level rises. It is thought that this almost immediate release is due to release of insulin that was previously manufactured, and was being stored in the beta cell. First responder The first level of EMS certification. They are normally the first to arrive on scene, and activate the appropriate level of EMS response. First stage of labor The part of labor when the cervix dilates fully (to 10 centimeters). The first stage of labor is also called the stage of dilatation. First-Order motion mechanisms Captures motion information from moving objects or features that differ from the background in luminance. First-Order statistics Captures differences in overall brightness. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Fingers, six The presence of an extra finger, a very common congenital malformation (birth defect). This condition is called hexadactyly. The word hexadactyly literally means six digits. In medical usage, hexadactyly does not specify whether the six digits are fingers or toes. Finished DNA sequence A DNA sequence in which the bases are identified to an accuracy of no more than 1 error in 10,000 and are placed in the right order and orientation along a chromosome with almost no gaps. A finished sequence is as opposed to a draft DNA sequence. Fire ant sting A scourge, these red or yellow ants of small-to-medium size, originally from South America, have a severe sting that burns like fire. Their sting-like that of bees, yellow jackets, hornets and wasps -- can trigger allergic reactions varying greatly in severity. Avoidance and prompt treatment are essential. In selected cases, allergy injection therapy is highly effective. Fire gilding A perilous process for gold-plating in which an amalgam of mercury and gold is applied to an object and then exposed to heat to vaporize the mercury and leave the gold behind in a thin layer. Fire gilding also is applicable to plating silver, copper, and copper alloys. The process of fie gilding is still used when antique work is to be repaired or an exact replica made. Fire gilding is hazardous because mercury vapors are emitted even at room temperature, presenting an appreciable risk of mercury poisoning. Fire gilding is also called mercury gilding. Fireworks injury An injury from a device for producing a striking display by the combustion of explosive or flammable compositions. First cranial nerve First degree burn A superficial burn with similar characteristics to a typical sun burn. The skin is red in color and sensation is intact. In fact, it is usually somewhat painful. First stage of labor The part of labor when the cervix dilates fully (to 10 centimeters). The first stage of labor is also called the stage of dilatation. FISH Abbreviation for fluorescence in situ hybridization, a molecular technique used in chromosome studies. FISH employs fluorescent (fluorescein tags) that glow under ultraviolet light to detect the hybridization (the combination) of molecular probes with specific chromosomes and specific chromosome regions. In FISH, the process vividly paints chromosomes or portions of chromosomes with fluorescent molecules. Fish bowl granuloma Localized nodular skin inflammation (small reddish raised areas of skin) caused by a bacterium called mycobacterium marinum. Fish bowl granuloma is typically acquired by occupational or recreational exposure to salt or fresh water, often resulting from minor trauma during caring for aquariums. The diagnosis is suggested by the history of exposure and confirmed by culturing tissue specimens which yield the microscopic organism, mycobacterium marinum. The infection can be treated with a variety of antibiotics, including doxycycline, minocycline, clarithromycin, rifampin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Also called "swimming pool granuloma." Fish oil, omega-3 A class of fatty acids found in fish oils, especially from salmon and other cold-water fish, that acts to lower the levels of cholesterol and LDL (low-density lipoproteins) in the blood. (LDL cholesterol is the "bad" cholesterol.) Omega-3 fish oil is therefore thought to be a neutraceutical, a food that provides health benefits. Eating fish has been reported to protect against late age-related macular degeneration, a common eye disease. The maximum benefit appears to be from eating fish once a week.
