Fatty liver
Fatty liver The buildup of fat in liver cells. The most common cause is alcoholism. Other causes include obesity, diabetes, and pregnancy. Also called steatosis.
RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Liver The largest organ in the body. The liver carries out many important functions, such as making bile, changing food into energy, and cleaning alcohol and poisons from the blood. Alcoholism A primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, most notably denial. Each of these symptoms may be continuous or periodic. Obesity Abnormal body weight, usually defined as more than 20 percent above average for age, height and bone structure. Diabetes A condition in which blood glucose is not well controlled. Type I diabetics make no insulin, whereas type 2 diabetics are characterized by the overproduction of insulin, but the inability of the target cells to respond to the insulin. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Fatty Acid A building block of fat. Fatty acid A condition characterized by a lessened capacity for work and reduced efficiency of accomplishment, usually accompanied by a feeling of weariness and tiredness. Fatigue can be acute and come on suddenly or chronic and persist. Fatty acid, trans An unhealthy substance, also known as trans fat, made through the chemical process of hydrogenation of oils. Hydrogenation solidifies liquid oils and increases the shelf life and the flavor stability of oils and foods that contain them. Trans fat is found in vegetable shortenings and in some margarines, crackers, cookies, snack foods and other foods. Fatty Acids A basic unit of fats. When insulin levels are too low or there is not enough glucose (sugar) to use for energy, the body burns fatty acids for energy. The body then makes ketone bodies, waste products that cause the acid level in the blood to become too high. This in turn may lead to ketoacidosis, a serious problem. Fatty acids Molecules that are long chains of lipid-carboxylic acid found in fats and oils and in cell membranes as a component of phospholipids and glycolipids. Fatty acids,omega-3 A class of fatty acids found in fish oils, especially from salmon and other cold-water fish, that acts to lower the levels of cholesterol and LDL (low-density lipoproteins) in the blood. Fatty alcohol Fatty alcohol: NAD+ oxidoreductase deficiency. Clinically known as the Sjogren-Larsson syndrome, this is a genetic (inherited) disease usually characterized by a triad of findings consisting of ichthyosis (thickened fish-like skin), spastic paraplegia (spasticity of the legs) and mental retardation. Fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency Also known as the Sjogren-Larsson syndrome, this is a genetic (inherited) disease usually characterized by a triad of clinical findings consisting of ichthyosis (thickened fish-like skin), spastic paraplegia (spasticity of the legs) and mental retardation. Fatty liver of pregnancy, acute Liver failure in late pregnancy, usually from unknown cause. Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) typically occurs in first-time pregnancies in the last trimester. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Fugue An altered state of consciousness in which what is happening now is unrelated to, or dissociated from what had happened then, in the preceding phase of existence; as for example in the alternating manifestations of dual or multiple personality. A state of dissociation, which subsequently may be followed by an amnesia for events which occurred during the state of dissociation. Friedreich's Ataxia Friedreich's Ataxia is a slowly progressive disorder of the nervous system and muscles characterized by the inability to coordinate voluntary muscle movements (ataxia). This condition is caused by degeneration of nerve tissue in the spinal cord and of nerves that extend to peripheral areas such as the arms and legs. It affects upper and lower limbs, and the head and neck. There is also some loss of the sensations of touch and pressure in the arms and legs. False negative report A negative result when in reality it is positive in nature. False positive report A positive result when in reality it is negative in nature. Fats One of the three main classes of food and a source of energy in the body. Bile dissolves fats, and enzymes break them down. This process moves fats into cells. Fatty liver Fecal fat test A test to measure the body's ability to break down and absorb fat. The patient eats a fat-free diet for 2 to 3 days before the test and collects stool samples for examination. Fecal incontinence Being unable to hold stool in the colon and rectum. Fecal occult-blood test Screening test for possible signs of cancer of the colon or rectum. Feces Stool. Fiber A substance in foods that comes from plants. Fiber helps with digestion by keeping stool soft so that it moves smoothly through the colon. Soluble fiber dissolves in water. Soluble fiber is found in beans, fruit, and oat products. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. Insoluble fiber is found in whole-grain products and vegetables. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Fatty liver.
