Fallopian tubes
Fallopian tubes Female reproductive organ. The fallopian tubes take up the mature ovum after ovulation and carry it to the uterus. The fallopian tubes are the site of fertilization. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Female The traditional definition of female was "an individual of the sex that bears young" or "that produces ova or eggs". However, things are not so simple today. Female can be defined by physical appearance, by chromosome constitution (see Female chromosome complement), or by gender identification. Female chromosome complement: The large majority of females have a 46, XX chromosome complement (46 chromosomes including two X chromosomes). A minority of females have other chromosome constitutions such as 45,X (45 chromosomes including only one X chromosome) and 47,XXX (47 chromosomes including three X chromosomes). Organ A structural unit of an animal or plant that serves a specific function. Ovum "Egg; the female reproductive element." Ovulation Release of a mature egg from an ovary. Uterus The uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped organ located in a woman's lower abdomen, between the bladder and the rectum, that sheds its lining each month during menstruation and in which a fertilized egg (ovum) becomes implanted and the fetus develops. Fertilization The combining of the genetic material carried by sperm and egg to create an embryo. Normally occurs inside the fallopian tube (in vivo) but may also occur in a petri dish (in vitro). SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Falling in love The personal experience and manifest expression of becoming intensely, and possibly suddenly, attached or bonded to another person. It may be reciprocal and a source of great ecstasy, or one-sided and a source of great agony. Usually it is erotosexual. Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation The Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation is a hospital in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, United States. Fallopian tube The tubal passageway connecting the ovary to the uterus. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Fibrosis The presence of scar tissue or collagen fibers in any tissue. In the liver, fibrosis or scarring of the liver damages the architecture and thus the functionality of the organ. Fibrosis, combined with the liver’s ability to regenerate, causes cirrhosis (regeneration within the scar tissue). Fibrous tissue Tissue consisting of or containing fibers. Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) The hormone released from the pituitary. FSH stimulates estrogen production in females, and sperm production in males. FSH uses cyclic AMP as its second messenger. Fallopian tubes Free radical Any molecule that contains an unpaired electron. Free radicals are unstable and will extract electrons from other biological molecules, which generates more free radicals. Fetus The stage of human development from 10 weeks' gestation until birth. Fertilization The combining of the genetic material carried by sperm and egg to create an embryo. Normally occurs inside the fallopian tube (in vivo) but may also occur in a petri dish (in vitro). Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia is a debilitating chronic syndrome (constellation of signs and symptoms) characterized by diffuse pain, fatigue, and a wide range of other symptoms. It is not contagious, and recent studies suggest that people with fibromyalgia may be genetically predispose. It affects more women than men, with a ratio globally of 3-5:1. Fibromyalgia is seen in 3-10% of the general population, and is mostly found between the ages 20 and 50. Farsightedness Hyperopia occurs when the eyeball is too short from front to back, or the eye's focusing mechanism is too weak, causing light rays to be focused behind, rather than on the retina. People with hyperopia have difficulty seeing objects close up. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Fallopian tubes.
