Eyespot

Eyespot A concentrated patch of photoreceptor cells on the skin present in some species.

Photoreceptor
A light sensitive neuron. Photoreceptors interact with light which produces changes in their electrical properties which are communicated to other neurons. They constitute the first stage in the physiological process which underlies vision. The human retina, like the retina of most vertebrates, contains two broad classes of photo-receptors, rods and cones.
Skin
Skin is an organ of the integumentary system; which is composed of a layer of tissues that protect underlying muscles and organs. Skin is used for insulation, vitamin D production, sensation, and excretion (through sweat).

Eyes, flashing lights in the
There are a number of causes of spontaneous flashing light sensations in the eye. A sensation of flashing lights can be caused when the vitreous (the clear, jelly-like substance that fills the middle of the eye) shrinks and tugs on the retina. These flashes of light can appear off and on for several weeks or months. With age, it is more common to experience flashes. They usually do not reflect a serious problem. However, if you notice the sudden appearance of light flashes or a sudden increase in flashing lights, you should see your ophthalmologist immediately to see if the retina has been torn or if there is another cause. Flashes of light that appear as jagged lines or "heat waves" in both eyes, often lasting 10-20 minutes, are different. They are usually caused by migraine, a spasm of blood vessels in the brain. Jagged lines or "heat waves" can also occur without a headache in which case they are termed ophthalmic migraine, or migraine without headache.
Eyes, glaucoma
Disease (there is more than one type) characterized by increased pressure within the eye. Glaucoma can lead to blindness. Glaucoma is five times more likely to occur in Blacks than in Whites. Early detection of glaucoma is essential to the preservation of vision. Glaucoma can be treated with medications, laser or traditional surgery.
Eyes, spots in front of the
Also known as "floaters", blurry spots that drift in front of the eyes but do not block vision. The blur is the result of debris from the vitreous casting a shadow on the retina. The spot is the image formed by a deposit of protein drifting about in the vitreous, the clear jelly-like substance that fills the middle of the eye.

An orientation selective cell which is also sensitive to the end of a line or edge, responding to short but not long lines or edge stimuli.
Epicapsular stars
Remnants left on the eye of the hyaloid canal, from development in the womb.
Epipolar line
For a given point in space, this is the line on which the point will fall in the opposite eye. This line is tilted out of the horizontal unless the eyes are fixated on a very distant object.
Equiluminant stimuli
Visual stimuli that vary only in color but not in luminance. Stereopsis and motion perception disappear at equiluminance indicating the presence of separate processing channels for color, motion and stereopsis.
Extrastriate cortex
Region of primate cerebral cortex anterior to striate cortex.

A purplish patch caused by extravasation of blood into the tissues differing from petechiae only in size.
