Exon
Exon The region of DNA coding for a protein or a segment of a protein. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Protein Any of a group of complex organic compounds which contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and usually sulfur, the characteristic element being nitrogen. Proteins, the principal constituents of the protoplasm of all cells, are of high molecular weight and consist essentially of combinations of a-amino acids in peptide linkages. Twenty different amino acids are commonly found in proteins, and each protein has a unique genetically defined amino acid sequence which determines its specific shape and function. Their roles include enzymatic catalysis, transport and storage, coordinated motion, nerve impulse generation and many others. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) An assay in which an enzyme is linked to an antibody and a coloured substrate is used to measure the activity of bound enzyme and, hence, the amount of bound antibody. Eosinophil A polymorphonuclear leukocyte with large eosinophilic (i.e. red) cytoplasmic granules. Eosinophil chemotactic factor of anaphylaxis (ECF-A) A substrate released from mast cells during anaphylaxis which attracts eosinophils. Epitope An alternative term for antigenic determinant. Equivalence zone In a precipitin reaction, the region in which the concentration of antigen and antibody leads to maximal precipitation. Exon Effeminate A womanish or sissyish manner and bearing in a man or boy stigmatized as an unmanly homosexual. Ego dystonic In psychiatry, the term used to apply to a proclivity, for example, toward homosexuality, in a person who seeks to repudiate it. Eidetic Characterized by vividly precise and accurate recall of objects, events, sounds or other imagery previously perceived. Elective mutism Failure to speak, or to be able to speak about certain topics, that is not necessarily permanent but is reversible under changed circumstances. Electrocutophilia A paraphilia of the sacrificial and expiatory stratagem in which sexuoerotic arousal and orgasm is dependent upon the use of electrical stimulation of the body to possibly include the nipples, urethra, penis/scrotum, vulva/clitoris/vagina and anal/rectal tissues. This paraphilia has been seen to occur more frequently among women than in men and has also resulted in accidental death. The activities of electrocutophilia may be exploratory or varietal sex play and not a paraphilia. It also may be part of a sadomasochistic repertory. Devices for "safe" sexuoerotic electrostimulation are now commercially available. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Exon.
