Effects, fetal rubella
Effects, fetal rubellaThe constellation of abnormalities, also called the rubella syndrome, caused by infection with the rubella (German measles) A virus before birth. The syndrome is characterized by multiple congenital malformations (birth defects) and mental retardation. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Rubella A mild, highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious birth defects if a pregnant woman is afflicted. Women who haven't had it should make sure they're immunized before conception. Syndrome A grouping of signs and symptoms, based on their frequent co-occurrence, that may suggest a common underlying pathogenesis, course, familial pattern, or treatment selection. Infection Anything that invades the body and reproduces. Infections can be bacteria, protozoa, fungi, or viruses. Bacteria and fungi are one celled creatures that cause many infections including strep throat, bladder infections, and some lung infections. Fungi cause “athlete’s foot” and thrush, an infection in the mouth. Protozoa are small organisms with many cells that can cause infections in the guts or in the lungs. Most healthy people do not get protozoal infections, but people with suppressed immune systems can. Viruses are not really organisms; they are tiny particles that can live only inside another cell. They reproduce by taking over a cell and causing that cell to make more virus particles, rather than doing what the cell is supposed to do. Viruses cause most colds and flu cases. Virus Ultramicroscopic infectious agent that replicates itself only within cells of living hosts; many are pathogenic; a piece of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) wrapped in a thin coat of protein. Congenital Present at birth. Retardation Delay or halt of any process such as mental or physical development. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Effect, founder A population group with an unusual frequency of a gene due to there having been only a small number of original members ("founders") one or more of whom had that gene. Effective dose The dose of a drug that will achieve the desired effect. Effeminate A womanish or sissyish manner and bearing in a man or boy stigmatized as an unmanly homosexual. Efferent Heading away. A system's efferent signals are those exiting to elsewhere. (As opposed to Afferent) Efferent nerve A nerve that carries impulses away from the central nervous system (CNS). An efferent nerve is the opposite of an afferent nerves that carries impulses toward the CNS. Efferent vessel A vessel carrying blood away from the heart. An artery or arteriole. Effexor Effexor is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) approved in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): venlafaxine hydrochloride. Effexor xr Effexor xr is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) approved in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): venlafaxine hydrochloride. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Edwards syndrome Trisomy 18 syndrome. Children with the syndrome have an extra chromosome 18 with a characteristic pattern of multiple malformations and mental retardation. Features include low birth weight, small head (microcephaly), small jaw (micrognathia), malformations of the heart and kidneys, clenched fists with abnormal finger positioning, and malformed feet. The mental retardation is profound with an IQ too low to measure. Nineteen out of 20 of these children die before their first birthday. EEE Eastern equine encephalitis. EFEMP1 A gene that encodes a protein with the long, complex name of EGF-containing fibulin-like extracellular matrix protein 1. EFEMP1 is now also known as FBLN3. Effect, founder A population group with an unusual frequency of a gene due to there having been only a small number of original members ("founders") one or more of whom had that gene. Effective dose The dose of a drug that will achieve the desired effect. Effects, fetal rubella Efferent nerve A nerve that carries impulses away from the central nervous system (CNS). An efferent nerve is the opposite of an afferent nerves that carries impulses toward the CNS. Efferent vessel A vessel carrying blood away from the heart. An artery or arteriole. EGD Esophagogastroduodenoscopy. EGF Epidermal growth factor. A polypeptide (small protein) that is a powerful mitogen. (It stimulates cells to enter mitosis, cell division. ) EGF promotes cell growth and differentiation, is essential in embryogenesis, and is important in wound healing. It is produced by many normal cell types and is made in large amounts by some tumors. The EGF gene is on chromosome 4q25 (whereas the gene for its receptor, EGFR, is on chromosome 7). The kidney is the main source of circulating EGF. EGF is also known as urogastrone (URG). Egg sac The "egg sac" or ovary is one of a pair of reproductive glands in women. They are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus. Each ovary is about the size and shape of an almond. The ovaries have two functions: production of eggs (ova) and female hormones. Each month, during the menstrual cycle, an egg is released from one ovary. The egg travels from the ovary through a fallopian tube to the uterus.
