Duodenal ulcer
Duodenal ulcer An ulcer in the lining of the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Ulcer A sore on the skin surface or on the stomach lining. Intestine The tube involved in digestion and extending from the stomach to the anus. Consists of the small intestine and the large intestine. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Duodenal Having to do with the duodenum. Duodenal biliary drainage A procedure used to diagnose gallstones when suspicion is high but other tests are negative. A thin tube is passed through a nostril down the throat, through the esophagus and stomach, into the duodenum. Once the tube is in place, a synthetic hormone related to cholecystokinin is injected IV. It causes the gallbladder to contract and squeeze out bile into the duodenum. The bile then is sucked up through the tube and examined for the presence of cholesterol and pigment particles under a microscope. A modification of duodenal biliary drainage involves collection of bile through an endoscope at the time of EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) or ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography). Duodenitis An irritation of the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Duodenum The first part of the small intestine. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Diverticulum A small pouch in the colon. These pouches are not painful or harmful unless they become infected or irritated. Dopa decarboxylase inhibitors Anti-Parkinson drugs that block the enzyme dopa decarboxylase. Doppler ultrasound A procedure that uses sound waves to evaluate heart, blood vessels, and valves. Dubin-Johnson syndrome An inherited form of chronic jaundice (yellow tint to the skin and eyes) that has no known cause. Dumping syndrome A condition that occurs when food moves too fast from the stomach into the small intestine. Symptoms are nausea, pain, weakness, and sweating. This syndrome most often affects people who have had stomach operations. Also called rapid gastric emptying. Duodenal ulcer Duodenitis An irritation of the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Duodenum The first part of the small intestine. Dupuytren's Contracture A hereditary thickening of the tough tissue, called fascia, that lies just below the skin of the palm. Dysentery An infectious disease of the colon. Symptoms include bloody, mucus-filled diarrhea; abdominal pain; fever; and loss of fluids from the body. Dysmenorrhea Pain or discomfort experienced just before or during a menstrual period.
