DuodenalHaving to do with the duodenum. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Duodenum The first part of the small intestine. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Duodenal biliary drainage A procedure used to diagnose gallstones when suspicion is high but other tests are negative. A thin tube is passed through a nostril down the throat, through the esophagus and stomach, into the duodenum. Once the tube is in place, a synthetic hormone related to cholecystokinin is injected IV. It causes the gallbladder to contract and squeeze out bile into the duodenum. The bile then is sucked up through the tube and examined for the presence of cholesterol and pigment particles under a microscope. A modification of duodenal biliary drainage involves collection of bile through an endoscope at the time of EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) or ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography). Duodenal ulcer An ulcer in the lining of the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Duodenitis An irritation of the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Duodenum The first part of the small intestine. DPT A vaccine containing antigens from diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus. Dressing A bandage for an external wound. Dropsy Abnormal buildup of fluid in tissues or a body cavity. Duct A channel or passage through which fluids move. Duodenal Dwarfism A deficiency of growth hormone resulting in short stature. Debulk A surgical procedure to decrease mass effect by removing a portion of a tumor or dead tissue. See mass effect. Decadron Dexamethasone. A glucocorticosteroid medication used to reduce brain tissue swelling. Decompressive Refers to a surgical procedure during which bone, tissue, or tumor is removed to lessen intracranial pressure.
