Donor insemination
Donor insemination Or Artificial insemination (AI. Deposition of sperm from a male donor inside a female reproductive tract for the purpose of achieving pregnancy.
RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Insemination To deposit sperm in the vagina. Sperm A sperm cell, or spermatozoon (pl. spermatozoa) (in Greek: sperm = semen and zoon = alive), is the haploid cell that is the male gamete. It is carried in fluid called semen, and is capable of fertilising an egg cell to form a zygote. A zygote can grow into a new organism, such as a human. Sperm cells contain half of the genetic information needed to create life. Generally, the sex of the offspring is determined by the sperm, through the chromosomal pair "XX" (for a female) or "XY" (for a male). Donor A person who gives an organ, tissue or blood to another person. A compatible donor is a person who has the same tissue and blood types as the person who receives the organ, tissue or blood. Female The traditional definition of female was "an individual of the sex that bears young" or "that produces ova or eggs". However, things are not so simple today. Female can be defined by physical appearance, by chromosome constitution (see Female chromosome complement), or by gender identification. Female chromosome complement: The large majority of females have a 46, XX chromosome complement (46 chromosomes including two X chromosomes). A minority of females have other chromosome constitutions such as 45,X (45 chromosomes including only one X chromosome) and 47,XXX (47 chromosomes including three X chromosomes). SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Donor A person who gives an organ, tissue or blood to another person. A compatible donor is a person who has the same tissue and blood types as the person who receives the organ, tissue or blood. Donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI) A cancer treatment in which lymphocytes from a bone marrow donor are infused into the person who received the original bone marrow transplant. The goal of donor lymphocyte infusion is to induce a remission of the cancer by a process called the graft-versus-tumor (GVT) effect. Donor lymphocyte infusion is basically meant to boost the GVT effect. The donor lymphocytes, which are T cells, attack and kill residual cancer cells. That is the strategy. Donor lymphocyte infusion has mainly been used to treat relapsed chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Patients with relapsed acute leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), myelodysplasia (MDS), Hodgkin disease, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and multiple myeloma have also been treated by donor leukocyte infusion. Donor, universal A person who is type O in the ABO blood group system and can donate blood to all recipients. Donostiako Ospitaletegia Donostiako Ospitaletegia is a hospital in San Sebastian, Basque Country (Spain). PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Dysphagia Problems in swallowing food or liquid, usually caused by blockage or injury to the esophagus. Dysplasia An abnormality of growth. Dyspnea Shortness of breath. Dysrhythmia An abnormal heart rhythm. Donor insemination Differentiated Having developed into a specialized cell or tissue type . Differentiation The process whereby an unspecialized early embryonic cell or stem cell acquires the features of a specialized cell, such as a heart, liver, or muscle cell. Diploid Refers to a cell having two sets of chromosomes (in humans, 46 chromosomes). In contrast, a haploid cell, such as a gamete, has only one set of chromosomes (23 in humans). DNA methylation A biochemical process involving the addition of chemical tags called methyl groups (-CH3) to DNA. Methylation can be a signal for a gene or a section of a chromosome to turn off gene expression and become inactive or "silent". Deficiency diseases Any disorder caused by a lack of essential nutrients. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Donor insemination.
