Diverticulitis, treatment of acute

Diverticulitis, treatment of acute

Antibiotics are usually needed. Oral antibiotics are sufficient when symptoms are mild. Liquid or low fiber foods are advised during acute diverticulitis attacks. In severe diverticulitis with high fever and pain, patients are hospitalized and given intravenous antibiotics. Surgery is needed for persistent bowel obstruction or abscesses not responding to antibiotics.

RELATED TERMS

Oral
Of or involving the mouth or mouth region or the surface on which the mouth is located.

Fiber
A substance in foods that comes from plants. Fiber helps with digestion by keeping stool soft so that it moves smoothly through the colon. Soluble fiber dissolves in water. Soluble fiber is found in beans, fruit, and oat products. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. Insoluble fiber is found in whole-grain products and vegetables.

Acute
1. Of short course. 2. Severe, but of a short duration. Not chronic.

Diverticulitis
A condition that occurs when small pouches in the colon (diverticula) become infected or irritated. Also called left-sided appendicitis.

Fever

It is a defensive reaction of the tissue to prevent the spread of infectious materials to the other parts of the body.

Diverticulitis
A condition that occurs when small pouches in the colon (diverticula) become infected or irritated. Also called left-sided appendicitis.

Diverticulitis, bleeding from
Diverticular bleeding typically occurs intermittently over several days. Colonoscopy is usually performed to confirm the diagnosis and exclude bleeding from other causes. Thermal probes cannot be employed to stop active diverticular bleeding. Therefore, surgical removal of the bleeding diverticula is necessary for those with persistent bleeding.

Diverticulosis
A condition that occurs when small pouches (diverticula) push outward through weak spots in the colon.

Diverticulosis/diverticulitis and fiber
High fiber diets help delay the progression of diverticulosis and, at least, reduce the bouts of diverticulitis.

Diverticulum
A small pouch in the colon. These pouches are not painful or harmful unless they become infected or irritated.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS

Dissection, axillary
Surgery in which the axilla (the armpit) is opened -- to "dissect" means to "cut apart" -- in order to identify, examine, and sometimes remove structures such as lymph nodes or other tissue for diagnosis or treatment.

Dissection, neck
Surgery in which the neck is opened -- to "dissect" means to "cut apart" -- in order to identify, examine, and sometimes remove structures such as lymph nodes or other tissue for diagnosis or treatment. A radical neck dissection involves removal of a tumor from the neck with an additional margin of apparently normal tissue of at least 2 cm, as well as removal of the lymph nodes from the neck.

Distance healing
Healing in which people seek to help patients simply with the power of the mind. Distance healing can include anything from therapeutic touch -- in which practitioners, without touching their patients, try to alter their energy fields -- to praying for people who are ill. Diving injury
An injury incurred from diving into water that is too shallow or has hidden hazards. These injuries may be to the head, neck, or spinal cord. Many diving injuries result when persons --predominantly males aged 15-25 years -- plunge into swimming pools or natural bodies of water such as rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans. In one study, 15 cases of quadriplegia were reported. One resulted from a dive into a swimming pool; the other 14 cases resulted from dives into rivers, streams, lakes, or oceans. Only three of these injured persons had objective evidence of the depth of the water at the time of injury, Most of the divers had underestimated it.
